I was wondering what are your opinions on the VDH badger brush that comes in the luxury shave set? I've only used that brush along with the VDH boar, and I quite like it. After a break in period it becomes quite decent to use. What do you think?

After Target started selling the VDH Luxury Shave Set, the brush in that set has changed, at least twice, so it depends on which one of those sets you bought.
About a year ago, I bought the brush by itself at Target. It is a black badger with a really nice handle. The knot is trimmed, possibly making it on of the cheapest black knots available. What is interesting is that the brush was an exact match to the one in the set, and other than Target that set was going for $30.00. At Target the set was $20.00. Other than Target that brush was $20.00. At Target it was about $10.00.
Later I noticed that the brush in the set was different. It was smaller and had a much smaller knot. Still later I noticed that the brush in the set more closely resembled the original brush, but with a cast not nearly as nice looking handle. It makes one wonder if they had to make adjustments to meet a price point.
Anyway, I have the 1st one. I don't think it was a very good brush. Trimming the hair in the knot to shape it results in stiffer and scrittchier hair. It also had the worst funky animal smell that I have ever had. Once the small was gone, I would rank it slightly above the Surrey (same as VDH) boar brush I still have and seldom use and not nearly as good as any of my other badgers. The main reason I keep it is that I think I may eventually re-knot it, as the handle really is very nice. It not only looks nice, it is shaped nice (easy to hold and use), and is very nicely weighted. If it were not for the handle, it would be gone.
I cannot comment on the later two brushes that came in that set as I have never tried them.
At least the apothecary bowl looks like it it would work well. If you get it at the right price, it is almost as though you get a free brush, one you could throw away if you don't like it.
