van der hagen glycerin vs delux

does anyone feel one of these soaps are better than the other or do you get a better shave with one vs. the other?

I think the deluxe is better. It seems to be more protective, I think it has Shea Butter in it . The glycerin is OK but I would only consider it for super lather where it excels.

I must say I've used and very much enjoyed both products. However, VDH Deluxe and VDH Glycerin are indeed two very different animals.

VDH Deluxe, in my opinion feels, shaves, and performs way above it's drugstore pedegree. There's a cocoa butter, moisturizing, lather with a subtle but very nice smell. It really could pass for a higher end soap without much more effort.

VDH Glycerin is also a great performer but seems much less complex than Deluxe in a lot of aspects. The glycerin variant is all about lubrication, it foams well and provides uber thick, very slick lather. As for scent, it does have one but I would say it is far more subtle even than the deluxe. This could never pass for a high end soap and is quite utilitarian, it does what it does and does so very well.

If I had to pick a winner between the two I would probably say Deluxe but it is really a tough call because they're both very good products. If you've never used VDH shaving soap I would probably recommend Deluxe but put the Glycerin version on your must try list as well.

Anybody have some thoughts on where the VDH Select sits in the VDH scheme of things? They advertise the Deluxe as a "heavy beard" soap and the Select as an "average beard" soap.

I prefer the Deluxe soap. It lathers well and protects better than the Select or Gylcerin,at least for me. As mentioned, it performs well above its price and is a very nice soap.

I believe someone posted an experiment where they melted the Select and the Glycerin together, and the result looked very much like the Deluxe. I prefer the Deluxe myself, though I plan to give the Glycerin another try.

haven't used either one, but i bought a deluxe recently, whipped up a bowl of lather and was so put off by the smell, I threw away the lather and the soap.

I just walked in a drug store to buy my first shave soap. Picked up this Deluxe. Can anyone vouch for this one?

It's my everyday shave soap. I have a heavy beard and it gives a perfect shave. Lots of protection and allows for a close cut of the whisker. It actually moisturizes decent too.

I prefer the Deluxe over the Glycerin & Luxury Soaps, I didn't think the Luxury was ~$3.40 better than the Deluxe for Moisturizing or Lather

The deluxe performs like a more expensive soap.

The glycerine doesn't perform well enough on my face to use.

I bought a 12 pack of the glycerine on Amazon because it was a good deal, and it's not available locally. big mistake.

You could pretty easily unload those on the B/S/T, I think.

Or, you could use them to make superlather with your favorite cream.

Or, you could use them in the shower as a bath soap.

Lots of options, so many not a BIG mistake........

The VDH Deluxe includes Shea Butter, while the Select does not. I don't use the Glycerin one anymore, as I get better results from the Select and the Deluxe. The Select does make for a nice lather and a great shave experience... just like the box says.

Just wanted to give a quick update on my first shave using the VHD soap. The soap is very useful. Based on all the posts suggesting you've got to work the soap if you want it to work for you, I loaded the brush and added water sparingly. I spent the weekend shaving both face and head and was happy with the results. I believe the shea butter is definitely a plus. For a couple $, this is definitely worth a try. It takes time (5min maybe) to really build up a good lather. I did it while watching the morning news. Make sure you're forearms are prepared.
