Vac pot seal question

I picked up a Westinghouse vac pot, apparently an 8 cup, and the seal didn't seem real tight. It's not brittle or cracked and is still plyable so I decided to try it. Didn't seal good enough for the water to rise.

The bottom "flange" of the seal in the pic. below seems snug when it goes in.

The top "flange" rests on the mouth of the bottom pot.

But you can move the top bowl up and down quite a bit from where the top "flange" rests on the bottom pot until you raise it up to where the bottom "flange" hits the mouth of the pot. The middle "flanges" don't seem to seal against the mouth of the pot. I've even tried wetting the gasket and twisting it when I put it together.

I'm sure it's the correct top and bottom pots as the top bowl is marked 8UW and the bottom bowl is marked 8LW.

Anyone have a quick fix for this?

I've looked at the dayseal website but they don't show any Westinghouse gaskets.

One good thing is that the Cory rod that came with it works better in my Yama than the 3 other Cory rods I have and I only paid $15 for the entire pot.

Another gasket? Electric tape a couple times around it may get a seal enough to work, not a good fix though

You could try coating the rubber gasket with a food grade silicone or other non toxic lubricant.

Thanks guys, although I don't know how the adhesive on electrical tape would do under heat in a food grade utensil. I may try and find some silicone.

I've also heard to boil the gasket a while, that may help a bit but I kinda doubt it.

I think I'll email Mr. Day and see if he has a gasket that will work, or if he can make a replacement. That being said, the Cory rod that is working excellent in my Yama is almost worth the purchase price itself. My coffee grinder settings go from 1 (french press) to 8 (espresso) with 5 being for drip grind. With the other rods I have I needed to use either 2 or 2 1/2 settings to get about a minute and a half draw down time, and that was inconsistent and stalled sometimes. With this new rod I started on setting 3 and got a 45 second draw down. On setting 4 I got a minute and a half draw down. On setting 3 1/2 I got a minute and five seconds draw down. Did some regular old Maxwell House today and got a 50 second draw down time.

I think I like the new Cory rod. :biggrin1:

It may be a stupid comment but I get the seal on my vac pot wet. For me this helps the seal seal.
