USPS and shipping aftershave

I collect watches... as such, I trade and sell a lot. I have noticed when I go to the USPS they ask if anything is liquid fragile or perishable.

How do you answer when shipping AS?

I guess the proper response is of course... Yes... but do they "hassle" you or is the cost any higher for shipping a liquid?

If it contains alcohol it can't go air. USPS does go a little overboard imo... especially when you can't have batteries shipped either. When it comes to A/S just have it shipped ground or if your overseas find a local dealer.

The batteries issue is understandable, when you realize that batteries when sent, can explode, and the USPS does not own any airplanes.

Aftershave should be classified ORM-D I believe (due to alcohol content). Which is basically things that contain hazardous materials, but a limited amount. It needs to be marked as such. I'm not sure if it falls under the $25,000 per day fine as reading the regulations is a rather painful endeavor.

Technically, when asked that question, you should answer that it contains liquid, and explain that it is aftershave/ cologne.

The reason they are asking, is to protect planes from hazardous materials. Aftershave is not fragile, nor explosive, and while liquid if shipped in the original bottle it probably won't leak. In my opinion, there is zero danger in shipping it on a plane.

I have only been hassled about shipping aftershave once: when shipping a factory sealed bottle of Florida Water, that had enough headroom in the bottle to allow it to slosh around, and make noise. The clerk still shipped it normally without any special restrictions.

Uh yeah. I was sending out a PIF a few months ago and had to get a box there and they spied the bottle of Clubman and told me I could not ship that since it was a hazardous material.

I may be wrong on the date, but as of November 1 you are now allowed to ship batteries, at least small lithium batteries. Also, another reason they are asking you about the liquids is in the even that something happens to the package and 'something' starts to leak out, they want to know what it is. If they do not know, they have to have to treat it as hazmat, which is a real pain. And if you wonder why they have to treat it as such, keep in mind that the USPS ships almost everything, which includes, but is not limited to, bodily fluids and waste. And if you compare clubman to urine(color) you might see why they want to know.

Never been asked, but on the couple of occasions that I have shipped aftershave, I taped the cap to the bottle, and then put the bottle inside of a ziplock bag.
