using Aftershave to scent soaps

I have an unscented shaving soap at home that I was planning to melt and fit to another container. I spoke to the lady who made the soap, and she said melting it wouldnt be a problem.

Could I use an aftershave that I like the smell of to add a scent to the soap?

any other suggestions for doing it?

I wouldn't suggest using aftershave. I don't have the chemical reason why you shouldn't but it just doesn't sound right....:001_huh:

Perhaps essential oils? There are several soapmakers here that will probably be along shortly to give you some better advice.

People mix Old Spice into their VDH. VanderSpice is what they call it.

Correct, I am one of many on the boards who does this. Not sure why there would be any detrimental effects, as if the Aftershave is harmless to your face when you are done shaving, it shouldn't cause any issues being on your face during shaving.

Mixing a good dose of Old Spice Aftershave into melted VDH Deluxe gives the soap a nice pleasing scent; vdh deluxe on it's own has a very mild faint scent.

The aftershave scent is pretty long lasting. I scented my VDH about 3 weeks ago, and the scent is still strong, and potent. :thumbup1:

awesome, just what I wanted to hear!

I thought maybe the alcohol would somehow mess up the consistency of the soap but apparently not! :001_smile

I may have to give this VanderSpice a try! :thumbup1:

I was going to mention that in my previous post: there is some danger, that if you add way too much Aftershave to the mix, the soap won't re-harden for quite some time, as the additional liquid will need time to evaporate out.

I don't think the Alcohol is going to remain around long enough to effect the soap. Alcohol evaporates away pretty quickly when exposed to air. :tongue_sm
