What's new

used to think I was a balm, now thinking maybe splash..

So I used to think I was a balm type of guy..sensitive skin, prone to razor burn, in need of healing. However, I've been using my Proraso splash, caswell-massey lime splash, and speick splash more often than my musgo balm lately. I love them all, but I have grown more attached to my splashes lately...maybe its the weather? It is getting summery here in Oklahoma...mid 70's and up! :thumbup1:

Anyone else have a similar experience with switching b/w balms and splashes?

Thanks,

X

yep, balms for the winter, splashes for the summer. I actually use splashes year round but use balms often during the cold dry months.

With my high viscosity, I'm pretty sure I'm a balm. I do have an abrasive personality though. Hmmmmmm....... :biggrin1:

I use both balms and splashes and I truly love both.
No particular preference between the two.

Used splashes almost exclusively until a few years back when I got my hands on some Musgor Real ASB. The ASBAD really kicked-in when I discovered SCS's milks and balms. Now I do more balms in the winter and more splashes in the summer.

Balms 99% of the time for me

Most splashes dry me out badly

I only use the Nivea Splash, and only during very hot bery humide heavy summer days

I started out using balms for the same reason. I have a fairly tough beard and very sensitive skin. Shaving had always been an unwelcome event for me, so I thought I NEEDED balm. I'm happy to say that's no longer the case! I love using splashes now that I've learned how to shave properly for my skin/beard type.

I still use balms in the winter, but I usually use a splash beforehand. I enjoy the invigorating feeling of a nice splash too much to use an ASB alone.

Splashes.
High alcohol content splashes.
Face burning, germ annihilating high alcohol splashes.

This is indeed what gets one hooked on the splashes...

"Will it burn this time, or just tingle? If a burn (hurts so good), how long will it last? Can I endure it?"

And then after the burn, the cool....and the tight smooth skin that follows.

I tried mixing MR-ASL with Thayer's WH and applying to my face.

YEAH, that's the ticket. I get the best of both worlds now. The aloe in Thayer's cancels out the alcohol rather nicely. If I felt anything, it was more of a tingle than a burn. I get toning from both WH and ASL, and finally NO BURNING.

I did the same thing today with Aqua Velva ... and NO BURN !!!

I just mixed Thayer's and AV together in the palm of my hand, about a 1:1 ratio, rubbed my hands together, and patted it on my face. (The ratio isn't critical. You don't have to get out your measuring spoons, just eyeball it.)

I forgot to apply ASB before I left the house, but my face still felt smooth and toned all night long.

I always use a splash that contains alcohol followed by a balm (normally C.O. Bigelow #1200). The alcohol splashes do a wonderful job of healing and toning the skin. The ASB takes care of any of the possible over drying effects of the alcohol.

The plus is that I get to use 2 products instead of 1.

Same here.

I switched from balm to splashes. I only use balms when my skin feels the need for it, which is more in winter than summer, but even in winter I rarely use one. I've had a bottle of Proraso Balm with about a quarter inch left in the bottom for a year after using up most of the bottle in a little more than one.

I also was a balm guy, used them for years until I discovered DE shaving and read some reviews on this site. Because my skin improved alot using soaps and creams I now use splashes 90% of the time.

As another member noted on another post, we who "thought" we had sensitive skin and needed a balm while cartridge shaving actually have very normal skin after proper wet shaving technique. I now use after shave splash with alcohol followed by an unscented balm!

Same/similar experience here - started with balms but am now enjoying splashes more. I think it is seasonal too - with "combination" skin I have generally oily skin but in the winter get dryness in my t-zone.

Temps are now mid-70s and up, you say?
Give Osage Rub a try - 14oz. bottle for dirt cheap and you'll find yourself using it during mid-day going forward due to its high menthol content as a welcome relief from the summer heat.
