Used blades - Trash or Recycle?

Just curious as to what others are doing. If you do recycle, is there anything special that needs to be done with them prior to recycling?

I use one of these kind of tins; instead of coins mine collects used blades. It is all metal so it can be easily recycled once the tin is full (which takes ages).

I think most use a blade bank ^ like this. I do. I'd put it to you this way...would you want to cut yourself on a used razor blade? Neither does anyone else. Your trash man will thank you. Take a soap can, cut the bottom off, duct tape it up and cut a slit in it. At least you'll sleep well.

I saw a picture somewhere of a guy who used an old bean can or similar like above and stuck loads of colourful blade wrappers all over it. It looked way cool! I wouldn't have wanted to throw it away though....

I've been dropping mine into a medium sized hard plastic Vitamin jar. After about 18 months now it's still only about one quarter full. At this rate I can start worrying about this subject again in another 5 years or so.

I use an Altoids (mints) tin, which, despite its small size, will take 2+ years to fill, and which can be safely recycled. And yes, there are lots of threads on this topic.

LOL!

And a little more information to add.

I was chatting with the guys at the recycling center and they said that sharps are NOT recycled. They don't want to run the risk of getting cut handling the materials. Medical sharps, as well as anything that they are able to identify as shaving waste, is incinerated.

Interesting. So I guess I'll just be pitching my blade bank when it gets full.

For the others, love the altoids and prescription med bottle ideas, thanks!

I made a slice in the lid of a small pickle jar. When its full, if I live that long, I will put some tape across the slice in the lid and put it out with the weekly trash.

I have a metal pepper can that I use for old blades. It'll take a long time to fill that can. When it is full, I'll seal the top and put it in with the recycling.

Yeah, I doubt they're picking individual razor blades out of the recycling stream.
More likely, electromagnets pull all the metal out at once and it's gets melted down.
And the little bit of blood you may have left on the blade is NOT surviving molten metal!

Great topic, I have been wanting to create something to house my used blades.
So far, I'm just using some old container, but I like the medicine bottle idea. I have a few extra large ones that I can use.
Thanks for the ideas.

I live in a place where everything goes to the "resource recovery center" for disposal. That means they pick through the trash for recyclables and burn the rest in the power plant.

A lot of my early shaves were with the Family Dollar blades that come in a plastic dispenser with a used blade slot on the back. They hold many more used blades than the five or ten new blades that come packed in them. When I run out of those I will just start tossing them into a wide mouth bottle for future disposal.
