URGENT! Do I want a Manhattan or a Negroni?

Oh yes, many. The basic formula is 2:1 whiskey:vermouth + bitters. Vary at your pleasure, the above is simply my personal favorite. YMMV.

I can't believe I didn't get the answer I would have gotten if I had asked, "I'm a newbie, should I get a 34c or ej89?"

Negroni. There's no way the bartender can get it wrong, and it's delicious. Manhatten is too mainstream.

My two favorite cocktails.

The solution I humbly offer: the Boulevardier - a Negroni with Bourbon instead of gin

It depends. What's the weather like? What are you having for dinner? What's the company like?

Both great drinks - although the Negroni gets my nod. There's no such thing as which is best.

There is only what is right for the moment.

And you really need to add a Margarita to the list. No screwing around with 'sour mix'. Just Tequila, fresh lime and Triple Sec.

Maybe a Sidecar - Cognac, Cointreau and lime. Or kick back with a great beer in one hand, a fine peaty Scotch in the other: a Boilermaker, if you will.

Really, the issue isn't which one. It's how do you find time for them all...

Indeed. Tough to get a good Margarita that isn't sickeningly sweet. I was bartending at a casino when a couple from Mexico approached the bar and asked if they could get a margarita. They explained they had one at another bar in the casino and it was terrible (they were terrible, trust me). The other bartender at my bar told them all the margaritas served in the casino bars were the same. I overheard and offered to make them a legit margarita. Well, they were very appreciative and said it was the only real margarita they were served in their entire time in the USA (a couple of months, I believe). Of course the other bartender later pulled me aside and asked why I would do that. (Clueless.)
