Truefitt & Hill's colognes

I have always used the colognes you typically buy at Macy's, ie John Varvotos, Gucci, Burberry and the like. I am looking to try a Truefitt & Hill cologne because I love their shaving cream, aftershave and pre-shave.
Can anyone tell me about their stuff? Is is strong and overpowering? Any recommendations?

I love Grafton and I like Spanish Leather, but the rest are decidedly below par IMO. Definitely order the sampler pack from their website so you can decide for yourself. Grafton smells just like TOBS Mr. Taylor cream and Spanish Leather has a strong, musky leather component wuth citrus, but is just a tad "department store."

However, I believe the ages they claim for some of their cologne formulas are pure BS.

Their sampler is worth getting. I like Trafalgar best, and also Freshman (which to me is smells "fresh+man" rather than "first year of college". The West Indian Lime is good, too, but like most citrus it doesn't have much staying power (which is exactly why I wear it at certain times). T&H's aftershave balms are nice, too.

Thanks for all the info. I like the Grafton a/s so I might go for the cologne. I just dont want anything too strong.

I enjoy the Spanish Leather. But, when I run out, suspect I will get TOBS Sandalwood cologne. Not the same, but I like them both and TOBS is less expensive.

If you like cool water, you will loveTruefitt's Freshman, it's a superior version of 1990's formulation Cool Water.

If you like Polo Sport of Paco Rabanne XS, you will likeTruefitt's Clubman, it's a very fresh amalgamation of the two.

If you like L'Eau de Issey, or any of it's summer flankers you'll likeTruefitt's 1805, it's an brilliantly sharp fresh scent.

If you'd like a more modern fresher version of some of the older classic fougeres, tryTruefitt's Grafton.

Not sure what I'd compare Truefitt's Spanish Leather to, but it is a very good wood/spice/leather scent, that isn't too heavy.

Trafalgar is their most distinctive and unique scent, it is very woody and spicy, but relies heavily also on persistent jasmine and citrus. One of the better "fresh/woody/spice" scents out there.

And my personal favorite of the Trufitt line, is their West indian Limes. This scent for me easily bests the good, tart, very shortlived Trumpers extract of Limes, and the overrated, shortlived Penhaligon's Extract of West Indian Limes. Truefitt's take on lime has first a delicious barrage of very natural citrus notes headlined by a huge lime note, and it is underlined by Orange Blossom, clove, and citral/citronella, which keeps the drydown from being too spicy or floral at any time, it stays limey all the way thru. A very fun and lively Lime scent that i will always own.

I am eager for any new releases from this house.

Thank you for your time in this indepth post. Im going to look at Grafton and Trafalgar. I have both shaving creams and like their scents.

I like the T&H Spanish Leather better than other "leather" scents I've tried. Be careful, though - after the initial blast it seems to have died down as if you were too sparing in the application, but it isn't done yet. The first time I used it I put a tiny amount on pulse points, and after about fifteen minutes I guessed that I hadn't used enough, so I reapplied but even more lightly. I'm very glad I like the scent as it grew in strength and stayed a long, long time.

Their aftershave balms work very well for me, even better than Nivea (I'm not keen on Nivea's scent, but it's kind of a benchmark for me because it takes good care of my skin, especially problem spots that may not even be areas that I shave). I tend to have dry skin on my right temple (who knows why?), and the T&H balm takes care of it quickly, and it lasts without leaving my skin greasy. I just rub in a moderate amount, let it soak in for a few minutes, and wipe off the excess with a dry towel, and you can't even tell that the dry spot was there.

I really like the Grafton cologne and get lotsa compliments on it because (I assume) it doesn't smell like everything else and comes across as "stately" and "grown up." It's definitely not something your average teenager is going to wear. It also has very good staying power, at least on me.

The lime smells very nice, but doesn't last very long at all.

Nice review. I put on West Indian Limes this morning and enjoyed it greatly. I am one of those guys who trumped up the Penhaligon's Extract of West Indian Limes cologne. I like the opening of the Penhaligon's better than T&H WIL, but the T&H cologne is much richer and less one-dimensional.

I use the T&H WIL bath soap for showering. It's a great soap and the scent is wonderful.:thumbup1:

I've heard that the 1805 cologne has a spice note that isn't in the cream. Can anyone confirm and if it is there, how much does it alter the scent?
