What's new

Tried Derby blades today, I'm sticking with Feathers...

I recently started DE shaving since X-Mas, and was given a ten pack of Feathers to start with. I never had a problem with cutting myself, and picked up the proper technique pretty quick.

I see many posts about Derby's, so I thought I would give them a shot.

I noticed right away that they were not near as sharp as Feathers. Now I'm a newbie and all, but it seems that a blade is only as good as it's edge. My uncle uses a straight, and he always seems to want his blade as sharp as possible. Seems to me this logic would carry over to DE razors as well.

I had them in my Gillette Adj, and even on 9, I wasn't getting near the close shave I was used to. I even had to apply slight pressure when shaving my neck, something I never had to do before.

I could see if I was on a budget, Derby would be the way to go. But being how I'm saving so much not buying those damn cartridges, I will gladly shell out extra for a superior product.

I see some posts about hand stropping and corking Derby blades to get them to work nice, but that is a step I don't think I should have to do. My Feathers work nice out of the box, and have a used blade bank.

My two cents...:001_huh:

lol, yeah, after a Feather, everything else can seem a little primitive at first. I had the same kind of "is there really such a thing as too sharp?" realization. My first experience of Derby's was right after Feathers and i haven't touched'm since. In addition to Feathers, I like Iridiums and Astras.

You're lucky to be so thick skinned :) Feathers are really rough blades, they cut me to shreds and gives me severe razorburn no matter what razor I use. When I cork them, they are usable though, but for me, corked Derbys works better. As they say, YMMV :)

My two favorite blades are Feathers and Super Iridiums. I think Super Iridiums are just a touch better than Feathers but it's pretty close. I've recently tried Astras and they're not bad but I don't rate them as being in the same class as Feathers and Super Iridiums.

I went to a sampler pack very quickly. There were lots of blades I just tried once and tossed them, inclusive the Derby's. I thought they were one of the worst blades. I liked even the Merkurs better, but to each his own. That's where the sample packs are for.
I bought 200 Astra's and 400 Feathers in the end and I'm settled for a while.

Astras? Really? Hmm. I started with the Israeli Personnas (blue packaging, IPs) and love them, but found the Astras a bit harder to shave with. Seem duller and required more passes.

Hated the Derbys, though.

+1 !!

My finding exactly.

Heres my findings in order of sampling

1st - Merkurs - Okay - well they were my first - what would I know?
2nd Feathers - Great, not a single problem - ditched the merkurs
3rd Derby - terrible, in the bin they went and back to the feathers -
4th Dorco - not as good as the feathers
5th Crystal - Israeli personas - dissapointing better than the others, feathers were better for me.
6th Shark Stainless - rubbish - bin job, back to the feathers
7th Lords - pffff, bin job - back to the feathers

Realised if it aint broke, don't fix it! So I gave up on sampling and bought 200 feathers :thumbup1:

YMMV
