Traveling light

I'm going to be going on a 2 week trip to Europe soon and will be constantly on the move. For that reason, I'm trying to keep my suitcase as light and small as possible. I'm going to be sacreligous here and say that I don't care about getting a great shave, just something to be presentable. I'm thinking about taking a Mach 3, but I'm not sure about cream/soap/gel/whatever. I'm not opposed to shaving with just water, but after 2 weeks, that might be a bit much for my skin to take.

How should I go about this?

You should be able to find shave soap sticks and DE blades in most supermarkets

That's what I would recommend. A shave stick & some brush for face lathering. You should be able to pick up a pack of blades there or since you will probably be checking a bag, just throw some in your suitcase. Bakelite razors are nice for travel :wink2:

If you already own a Mach 3 that's great, but I normally go with twin blade disposables and bar soap when traveling (less worry about theft, loss, or damage). I refuse to risk any of my DE collection when travelling.

I vote for the Mach 3 (if you already have the handle and carts) and any brushless cream or gel that works for you.
Keep it simple and TSA friendly.
As for me, I wouldn't want to spend any time poking around looking for blades unless you want to make this part of the trip.
Too many other things to do and see.

Since I'm now partial to DE razors now, I like the Merkur Travel razors and have a Muhle travel brush. The Merkur razor comes in a case that holds a pack of blades. There are lots of travel brushes on the market. You can also just throw your brush into a Muhle plastic brush tube. You could use a slick bath soap bar that could double as your shaving soap. These items would take up very little room and you would get a great shave. You can also buy small travel containers to hold your shaving cream and aftershave or just wait until you get to Europe and have fun buying shaving products over there. Don't skimp out on proper shaving technique while traveling. You don't want to have a nicked face while you are on vacation, that's no fun.

How is a DE and a few blades any heavier or bulkier than a cart razor?

This is true! Also you want to be sure you've got a fairly bullet-proof soap/cream that is tolerant of water quality and still delivers a decent lather; I tend to carry Proraso Green cream when I travel as water quality varies dramatically in Australia from super-soft in Melbourne to hard as nails in Adelaide - it also packs light and gets lighter as you use it and cheap enough that loss won't make you cry (but any stick or decent cream will suffice if you KNOW it's a forgiving performer).

the added weight of the security folks?

OP hasn't stated whether he is checking luggage or travelling solely with carry-on. If checked it's a DE and small kit all-the-way. If carry on then DE is deffo no-go. Weight between a decent DE kit and carts/can is negligible in my experience.

+1 on the Merkur travel razor's. They fold up into a pouch thats only takes up a couple of inches. Several blades can fit right into the pouch. I also have the Dovo stainless steel travel brush that breaks down into a really small cylinder. Combine the two and they won't take up much room at all.

For me this would be the perfect excuse to go micro with a cool travel razor, brush, and soap stick. But you can skop the brush and lather some cram samples with your fingers ot try shave oil.
