Travel razor ideas

Today I have been considering which razor to purchase for travelling. I have acquired four silver chrome salt shaker style shaving tubes from vintage leather travel kits. I have Two styles, chrome and Bakelite lined chrome.

I have one for brush, a couple for soaps (Palmolive and Arko) and one spare to take a razor.

The size of the container dictates that I need a 3 piece with the handle being no more than 3.5" or 90mm.

I prefer heavy razors so my two ball end alloy Techs are not my preferred option (they came in the kits and are unused)

Having read reviews I have discounted the Parker 90 series on the grounds of build quality/control.

I currently use a Merkur 38c, SS red tip, Fatboy and Slim. I have only recently returned to the wet shave but I use all razors with feathers, no irritations or weepers and I have dialled up the Fatboy to 9 for first pass without disaster!

I have considered buying an Ikon Bulldog handle from shave nation to give me the heft I like, but what 2 piece head could I couple it with?

Can heads be bought separately?

If not this route, which razor would you guys recommend? I am open to ideas for both vintage and new models.

Cost is a consideration, at £16 delivered on eBay the Parker was tempting until I checked out the reviews....

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Regards,

Cyril

I take both of the Merkur travel DE's along in my dopp kit when I travel, both the regular safety bar and the OC. They break down and fit into its own small leather pouch, and don't take up much room at all. Plus you can put several extra blades right inside the pouch. This gives you the choice of either the safety bar or the OC when you travel.

I had the Merkur travel razor mentioned above but I sold it because it was too mild for me.

Since you stated that you successfully run the Fatboy dialed to 9 with a Feather blade, I suggest you try the Muhle R41 which is even more efficient than the Fatboy. If you like the stock handle, fine. If not you can customize with the Bulldog handle you are considering. Alternatively, you can also use the R41 head with the handle that comes with the Merkur travel kit and take advantage of the nifty leatherette pouch. You probably won't like that though because you mentioned your preference for heavy handles. I travel with a stock R41. I keep one permanently in my travel kit and I don't have a special case for it.

Food for thought indeed! Thanks for the replies. I need to research what is available it seems. I mentioned the Fatboy on 9 just to illustrate that I am not too worried about aggression. Either I have a face like an old boot, or my technique is coming on.

I have looked quickly at the Muhle R41 and I must confess, that it does appeal. If the handle can be accommodated in one of my wee travel tubes (I.e it's under 3.5") then it could well be the one. It is not expensive and if I wish I guess I could add the bulldog handle at a later date....

I see a trip to the Gentlemans Groom Room Dundee very soon! :)

Any suggestions for a vintage alternative?

I choose to carry-on rather than check my bags on my way too frequent trips, so I just go with a Mach 3 when traveling. I do take my brush, a small tube of Bigelow cream, and various aftershaves in small 3oz travel containers with me so I'm not completely lost in the canned goo wilderness...

I use my Slim Adjustable and a Wee Scot when I'm on the road and not carrying on my bag. I find the Slim to be a mild shaver, but I like mild shavers on the road because there are so many variables that I can't control and that are different from my normal routine (water temperature, water hardness, time etc.). The Slim is pretty compact and user grade so I don't worry about it too much in my dopp kit. The Wee Scot is a great traveler because of its size. It dries quickly, so again I don't worry about it when I shave right before checking out in the morning. Both the Slim and the Wee Scot are inexpensive, so I don't worry too much about them getting lost or stolen by TSA agents.

Here is another vote for the Merkur Travel razor. You will be hard put to find a more compact razor. It does not have the heft of a regular DE but it will still give you a decent shave. If weight is not a problem you could consider getting the Wilko Classic. It is made of plastic, dirt cheap, very light and expendable. It delivers a surprisingly good shave. If you shave with straights, a dovo shavette is another option.

Unfortunately I have a history of leaving personal items, even clothes, in hotels over the years... So I only travel with low cost easily replaced shaving gear. I use a Lord 6 which is an excellent shaver, but probably too light for what you are looking for. How about one of the lower cost EJ models? Parker sells a low cost leather case that will fit a long handle razor.

The EJ89 is a 3 piece razor which will break down nicely and the handle is just under 90mm. Cost delivered is just under £20. Probably worth paying the extra £4 and you know you have quality.
I got a leather case for mine so that is part of my travel combination

That sounds interesting, where did you order the DE89 for under £20 delivered?

Unless it must fit our dedicated razor container, do what I do. I take the razor I'm in the mood for, and perhaps more than one. They are already small items that pack easily.

I have the Merkur 46 travel razor and a Muhle shaving brush with a shave stick. You can use a small essential oil bottle to hold aftershave lotion.
