Travel equiptment

Hello all.

I'm going to try to get back on the DE horse again with my Merkur Model 180 razor and Tweezerman shaving brush. However, I'm going to be travelling a lot very soon. Any recommendations for DE safety razor and brush storage?

One recommendation that comes to mind ... Don't take anything you can't afford to lose or can't be easily replaced. Whether its due to theft, carelessness or negligence, its too easy to come home with less than you left with.

Another thing I always do when traveling is to lower my standards. I don't expect to get a BBS shave every day. I only shoot for a close, comfortable shave and to look presentable. If I can squeeze a DFS out of it, that's a bonus.

Furthermore, I usually leave my brush at home. There isn't a soap or cream I've tried that can't be lathered up by hand. Neither my whiskers nor my razor can tell the difference.

Good point. Honestly, I'm more concerned with storing my DE for travel. It's a Merkur model 180, which is a half inch longer than the 178.

Haha, I'm working on getting to the point where I don't cut myself constantly. I know DE razors offer more control, but I've also learned that I can cut myself deeper. Incidentally, any pointers on how to shave around acne?

Best way to shave around acne is to eliminate it in the first place. Get a good face scrub that will remove the excess oil so you don't have to shave over the bumps. You should be able to get what you need at most drugstores. Consult a dermatologist if you have really bad acne and might need a prescription strength acne med.

ydnom89,

I use a plastic Feather TTO razor, Feather blades, a nylon shaving brush (Vulfix) and a Palmolive tallow shaving stick when travelling on buisness.

As has been said above, it is no great cost if they get lost or stolen, and they give a very good shave.

Have fun !

Best regards

Russ

I use a an eyeglass case. It holds any of my razors, plus a blade pack and a polishing cloth (mostly to stop rattles).

The rest of my travel kit is an Omega 10066, a shave stick, and a small lotion bottle of KMF lavender.

Wow... That's an excellent idea! I'm going to go with a glasses case. Should I travel with the blade in or take it out and put it in when I arrive at the destination?

haha actually I drive everywhere. Thank God, no TSA to fight. I was worried about whether I would mess up the blade if I had it in the razor and it gets dinged around

When I fly, I mail the blades ahead of time. It's kind of nice to check into a hotel and have mail waiting for me.

I have struggled with acne myself and I have found that wet shaving improves my complexion. You exfoliate your skin slightly when you use the brush. I would highly recommend visiting a dermatologist as they have prescriptions that work significantly better than over the counter products.

With regards to a travel setup, I bring my tweezerman brush along and some of the cream samples from Trumpers. They come in these little tubs that have screw on tops that are perfect for travel. For the razor I just bring along a single bladed disposable.

i use a plastic travel soap case to store most of my stuff. inside i have:

1) small "recycled" sample pot filled with proraso pre/post cream
2) styptic pencil
3) simpson wee scot shaving brush
4) small travel bottle of SCS lavender ASB
5) spray vial of l' occitane cologne

combine this with a speick shave stick and either a tuckaway or a 3 piece gillette TECH and you have a very small kit with all of the basics

+1 on the eyeglass case. Works great, cheap (or free...most people have a few stashed away in the back of the drawer), and is surprisingly roomy. You can jam a lot of little bottles and stuff in there along with the razor and blades.

When I travel it is for months at a time. I take what I like to use.

While your method is safe it is uncomfortable in the long haul

Lets face it a Merkur razor is what 20-30 bucks ?
If that loss hurts you you should not be traveling IMO

It's a bit of a YMMV thing like anything else here. I travel with a Col Littleton shave kit and the same stuff I use at home. The DE89L goes into a leather DE sleeve and the brush goes into a travel tube. I have not done any flying with a DE so far -- just road trips.

Again, YMMV. Many DE's are inexpensive but not necessarily easy to replace when traveling. I mean, you can't just run to any store for a replacement. That's not even considering those that have DE's that are rare or expensive.

For road travel, I switch from morning shaving to evening shaving, especially if I'm going to be traveling the next day instead of staying in the hotel another day. By switching to evening shaving, my brush has a chance to dry out overnight so the bristles don't get all bent and gnarly. I keep my fat handled Gillette DE in my dopp kit and use my long handled one at home. For a brush, I have an old one (oops, I don't have any new ones) that for no particular reason became my travel brush. For my soap, I shoved a Williams (catcalls, anyone?) cake into an Altoids can so that it doesn't get broken into bits during travel.

For air travel, I have conceded to the paranoia of the times and keep TSA happy by using some sort of cartridge razor:thumbdown
