Tracking blades uses

OK, for those of us that have several razors loaded up and ready at any given time, so we can just grab a different one as the mood strikes, what methods do you use for tracking how many uses are on a blade in a particular razor?

I keep the paper wrapper the blade was in and tear a nick in it after each use, if I have more than one razor loaded I sit it with the head resting on the wrapper.

If you really want to track your blades without the hassle of markers and wrappers, you can make an excel spreadsheet to keep track of your use.

Blade use tracking? Yeah, there's an app for that... ??! lol I'm a pretty all out geek, as in I once wrote an excel program for my ex-wife to help her make grocery lists and track her coupon usage... but in this instance I was looking for ideas I could put in place without needing electronics in the bathroom while shaving. lol

That's too much work (for me, anyway)! I have a hard enough time remembering all I need to remember. Remembering to tear a notch or write a note--well, I would forget to do that!

As long as I shave with the same razor for three days in a row, I can remember that and then toss the blade. So, that's my system.

I only use one blade at a time but I use a die to keep track. The die lets me keep track of how many shaves I have on the blade, 1-5, usually bin after the sixth use.

Yup! I don't know if it was you I got this from on the forum a while back but this is what I started doing too. I usually don't have more than a couple out at a time but on weekends I seem to want to get experimental with different razors and blades so I might pop a new one out. I have been generally only using blades 3 times no matter what blade it is, so if a wrapper already has 2 tears in it I throw it away after that next shave.

I agree. I personally just bin the blade if it gives me any discomfort (or shelve it if it's a straight).

Yeah, I should just do that... but for some reason if I'm most of the way through like the 3rd pass and only have half that and some touchup, I will push through to the end even if the blade is starting to feel the wear of a shave too many on it, due to me losing track and this being like the 5th use or such.

Isn't that what the numbers on the blade are for?

If you wanted to use them that way with like a sharpie, you probably could. I'm pretty sure they are there to help the factory track which grinding wheel did which side of what edge, for quality tracking purposes... On a TTO razor, that's not a bad way to do it, or if you already pull the blade out of your 2/3 piece after each shave anyways. I don't usually pull the blade out after each shave, so that would add an extra blade handling step each shave.

Really, anything less than a full-fledged database will only limit your tracking abilities. Once properly programmed, you'll have your data retrieval in a nanosecond. Don't shortchange yourself with a mere numbers cruncher! :w00t:

I was just joking around. :biggrin1:
It was a reference to the frequent threads about what they're there for.

ROTFL. I do love this place. Well played, sir.

I never have more than 3 going at any one time, so I just keep track in my head. I suppose when I get as old as you guys that may be an issue! :biggrin1:

There is an advantage to being older... we have easier to find and better birth year razors. Just ask my friend born in 1981. While decent, the Black Beauty has a plastic bottom plate instead of all metal construction, and even finding any 81's is proving to be way harder than the 50's and 60's models.

I learned my lesson about pushing through the hard way. At any point in any shave I immediately stop and change blades as soon as it is tugging. I can replace blades easier than I can patch up my face.

I have 4 DE razors, and I too use dice to keep track of the shaves on each blade. I start with #1 and I'll go to 4 and sometimes 5 shaves. Then I can the blade and start again with the new blade. I use one die for each razor.
