Too clumsy for straight?

For a couple of months I've been jumping the bandwagon - with a shavette using long dovos/swedes (are those only supposed to last one shave? Seems so!), and I'm just too clumsy using this tool!

Of course I've cut my face up, but other stuff: Losing it and gripping it by reflex - ouch. Concentrating on other stuff and thumbing the edge - double ouch. Stuff like that. I'm just not focused enough all the time, so I end up doing something stupid.

I'm really considering giving my shavette a long pause, whilst getting excellent and non-bloddy shaves with my slant. Or should I move it up a notch and hope the increased weight of a real straight sharpens my senses?

(whatever you translate that into into US English).

I just seem to handle things very awkwardly. You should see the mess I make of chopsticks. Once, in Guangzhou, I was sharing a table with workmates and a strangers - I had them in fits of laughter with my cackhandedness.

I'm not sure I should attempt a straight for fear of perfectly shaving one side of my face, and shredding the other.

since you're posting here, i think you're looking for an encouragement.
well, there's only one way to find out, i say go for it and see how it goes.
may be it'll work, may be not, but at least you'd have done what you want :)

Sounds like you need to wash your face with ice water and get a strong cup of coffee before you shave. Maybe spraying the area with a refreshing scent might help you maintain concentration. You could stick a note with bold letters on the mirror to remind you to focus. Being in control is what its all about so I think you should stick to the shavette until you get it right.

I think you should hit the classified section and buy yourself a good straight razor and jump in with two feet!

Get some TABAC and make a nice shave cream, strop up your razor and get to work!

Take your time and enjoy the shave!

I don't know your full situation. Maybe it's nothing. Some people have shot nerves - ADD, PTSD, some have chem. imbalances, or just kids running around; hay, I have distracting/perplexing problems/issues so I know how it feels to get disheveled, maybe it's that simple. If you can get past the problem, whatever it is, do what makes YOU happy and comfortable. If you decide not to give up the idea of Str8s, have fun; wet shaving should be relaxing & FUN! Get in the zone. Listen to calming music after a hot bath or shower and learn the strokes.:001_smile
