What's new

Tom Ford

Okay, so I am a newbie with colognes. My experience in the past is simply with the designer ones (Polo, Prada, Lacoste etc.) but I wanted to step up my game. I went to Sephora and sniffed Tom Ford Extreme and Grey Vetiver. I think I prefer the Extreme as the Grey Vetiver just seemed mostly like a regular cologne. Perhaps my scent of smell isn't that great (which yeah I would say is the case).

Stayed in Sephora for 10 minutes hoping some associate would be free to help me perhaps giving me some samples of Tom Ford but they were all busy helping women! Anyways, where can I purchase Tom Ford for the best price? I dont want to pay $150 plus 13% tax for the Extreme. What is the general consensus of the Extreme by the way?

This is the description:

Pure essences of Rum, Haitian Vetiver, Caramel, Vanilla, Black Truffle, and Fir Balsam are blended with a supple Leather Accord and Amber. Rich and velvety Patchouli Vieux, a vintage essential oil, and precious Shoyeido Incense, considered the finest incense in the world, add lasting layers of sensuality.

Also, on a side note is Creed better/worse ingredients wise compared to Tom Ford or is it just a matter of a preference of smell?

Ok, this is what I have found. An initial sticker shock will give forth copious amounts of samples. I bought a bottle of Santal Blushand proceeded to receive about 20ml of samples. Other than participating in group buys, the sticker price seems to be pretty set unless you buy gray market

Go to Neiman Marcus. They are always generous with the samples. No way I'd spend that kind of coin for something I've smelled for all of ten minutes.

I have never really seen Tom Ford fragrances discounted that much online. It is an expensive brand. Grey Vetyver is excellent in my opinion. I have not smelled "extreme", but I have smelled the original and I was underwhelmed.

Try to get a sample or order a decant from a reputable seller. If the price is too good to be true, you're probably getting a counterfeit frag from China.

I haven't seen it discounted either, but Sephora is the best place to get samples in my experience. Try going back again, ask somebody nicely and I think they're supposed to give you up to three samples.

I own both extreme and Grey Vetiver. I might like extreme a bit more, but my Grey Vetiver gets used way more often these days.

Alright, ill go again. How about buying from fragrancenet.com?

Also, is the private collection superior in any way?

If fragrancenet has them I'd have no problems ordering it from there. They almost always have 15-20% coupons, and I've never had an issue with several orders I've placed there. When I looked, fords weren't in stock, but I'd say go for it if they are in stock.

I don't have a clue if the private blends use better ingredients or not, but they smell different and smell darn nice to me. I love love love Tuscan Leather. Private blends at full retail is a hard pill to swallow though, you can look for splits that will get you juice for a bit cheaper.

It will be roughly the same price on Fragrancenet.....but it is a legit site.....I have ordered from them before.

Lets just say if you are taken back by the price of the Extreme, the Private Collection might send you into shock.......

Superior might not be the right way to look at it. Perhaps more "specialized" and more singularly focused. TF for Men Extreme and Grey Vetiver are a bit more "generic" male scents. I don't mean that in a bad way, they're just another variation on manly Fragrances.

Tobacco Vanille and Tuscan Leather are two of the most popular private collection scents with guys. Those names pretty describe what they smell like. It is much harder to put a finger on what TF Extreme smells like. It's a good, generally well regarded scent, but like a lot of male scents, it's a blend of many different manly notes.

Hmmm.if you're a drinking man, think of TF Extreme as a blended scotch, and the private collection as single malt.
