TM Steerhide

I had one of these a while back but decided to sell it. Well that was a mistake and just this evening had some email exchanges with Tony and ordered up a 2.5 steerhide with genuine linen and barber cut ends.

Really looking forward to it. Makes #3 for me.

I had a very similar exchange with Mr. Miller this evening as well, however, undecided about bridle or steer hide. Wanted which ever one he felt had more draw. I, too, asked for genuine linen. Cant wait!

I have two of the steerhide strops. They are fantastic. I kind of want a latigo, so I have one with a heavier draw too.

I purchased a 3" Old No.2 Premium Steerhide/Genuine Linen with D rings last year. My all-time favourite strop. How will this leather compare to Tony's current English Bridle, please?

Marco-

I asked Tony this same question. I am not quoting him here and maybe Mr. Miller will chime in, but my understanding the EB leather is quite varied from hide to hide regarding draw, etc. However, the steer hide, would on average, have a lighter draw than the EB. Again, this is my understanding- I am not quoting Mr. Miller.

Thank you, Joe. Much appreciated.

My pleasure. Again, I would pose this question to Mr. Miller directly if you are considering an EB strop from him, but my impression from our exchange last night is the steer hide will have a light to light-medium draw where as the EB will vary depending on the hide but will have a heavier or "slower" draw in general.

One thing about bridle, latigo and other tanned leathers (IMO) is you can apply or remove dressings to increase or decrease the draw, to an extent.

I found adding oil can increase the draw, while wiping down the leather with water or alcohol can decrease the draw. With a brushed finished surface like the TM steerhide or horsehide, you wouldn't want to apply anything at all.

YMMV of course, but my TM latigo practice strop with a little Obenaufs has loads of draw, while my premium untreated TM Latigo has medium to light draw. As the tanned leather breaks in the draw should change too.

Finally, the amount of tension in the strop can affect draw too.

I agree, my TM latigo has a light to medium draw while the Notovan has, to me, a heavier medium draw.

I love my 3" TM Steer Hide. It's a great strop and altogether different than my 2 1/2" TM Latigo which has a heavier draws. Enjoy it Rick.

Tony did mention to me the bridle was not as easy to get. I don't have a horse but am confident the "Bridle Police" won't be knocking on my door. With a dozen straights I thought I was done but it never occurred to me to have more than one strop.

So tell me Fair Gentlemen might this be a chance to test my salesmanship skills - cough, cough - and try to convince SWMBO that, "Actually Honey, I just found out that the straight need to be paired with the strop... kind of like a marriage - you know monogamous. So I am at a real shortage with just the two strops. And there are so many variations - D rings, handles, linen, cotton, steer, kangaroo. If I am to remain in the Fraternal Order of Goose-stepping Straight Users I need to get with the program. So I was thinking we may as well sell the spare tires out of our two cars and..."

I like a low draw for hollow grounds like TM horsehide or Steerhide. For my wedges and Kamisori a heavier draw seems to work better, so a Notovan or Latigo for those.
Then for the in between ones a Kanayama works nicely.

I have re-discussed this with Mr. Miller this evening. He said with his current stock, after significant evaluation, the current stock of steer hide and bridle leather seem to offer the same draw. Because I already have an English bridle strop, I chose to go with a steer hide with bridle leather handles and genuine linen. This is my first TM. I cannot wait.

I am awaiting an email from the gentleman at aframestokyo regarding the restocking of the Kanayama. Per the last email, it should be less than 2 weeks.

I love my Steerhide on my full hollow grounds, too. My Dovo and TIs get a wonderful feeling after stropping. Suppose will be the same on my next to arrive Boker.

Thank you for the info, Joe. One day I may add an English Bridle from TM, his Steerhide and Horsehide are so great!
