Tips for one handed shaving

I had a little accident last week with a table saw that left the first two fingers on my left hand a little messed up. It will be a while before the index finger works right if ever. So, I'm working on right handed shaving. Luckily I'm right handed. I'm getting better but I'm looking for some ideas on grips. I did some searching but didn't come up with much.

Did you forget to use a push stick?
Sorry to hear about your accident.
Xman on SRP has a video of his one handed technique, I'll see if I can find it.

All I do is right handed shaving. It started with the DE and I just keep doing it with straights. It's no problem really.

Damn, sorry to hear it!

Thanks, not paying attention while cutting flooring. When it's all said and done, for the same price, I could have probably had my floors covered with fossilized mammoth tusk and saved the fingers. Live and learn I guess.

Sorry to hear about the accident. I actually only straight shave with one hand, and I find the key is in experimenting with different grips. I can get a DFS in 5 minutes with my straight in only my right hand, but I use a few different grips, one of which I think I may have made up myself...

Anyway, I think as you experiment with it you will find how to best get each area of your face. As I shaved daily and felt which areas of my face needed improvement to reach BBS, I worked on those spots and eventually ended up with BBS most of the time. I suspect it'll be a similar process of figuring out certain grips for certain angles on the trouble spots you're bound to come across.

Mate I was once in your situation: A window broke and a piece of glass went trhough my wrist, arteria and almost tendons. 25 stiches later I was left using only my left hand (I'm right handed).

As a stubborn guy that I am, I did everything by myself, even cook.
What I used to do, is use my index and middle fingers as a tenace to hold things... I know it may not offer proper grip to shave, but is an idea.

Good luck with your recovery, and keep the spirit up!

Man, sorry to hear about that. The most important hand position for me is the reverse free hand. That works great. You guys have a barbers manual in here somewhere?

Lets see, I just essentially move the razor over to the other side of the face, then shave with the edge (although your using the opposite side of the edge at that point).

You could try this:

shaving with one hand is the only way i only percieved of doing it. i didn't know people would even use their left hand. i would end up decapitating myself if i used my left..

I'm shaving one-handed (also right, my dominant hand) due ti busting up my left arm in a work accident that required a plate and screws and a long road to recovery.

Honestly, I'm not having any problems. I use my old vintage Gillettes, mainly my slim adjustable and a boar brush/soap. I don't really need any special techniques or anything.

I actually started getting into wetshaving because I won't be able to lift weights for a long time.

Good luck on the recovery.

Watch where the non-shaving hand is at all times!

It's easy to remember to watch blade vs face, but once you're done with a stroke, don't hit the other hand when you move it back to start another one.

Forgot it once with a sanguine shavette. Cut my index finger right on the outer knuckle, not pleasant :(

That is exactly how I shave my left side...

I'm sorry to hear about your injury. I only shave with my right and it feels intuitive to me. Once you figure out a couple of grips you may never go back.

I think it's a real tragedy that it actually cost you money to get fixed. I hope your recovery time is short.
