Tip your barber?

Do you tip your barber in the USA?
Wanted to get people's take on the matter. Do you settle your bill and hand over more money for a tip?

I've tipped at large shops where the person cutting my hair was not the owner/operator.
I have and haven't tipped at small shops where the owner cut my hair; it depends on whether I'm coming back or not.
I tip at the place I'm currently going to because I feel he doesn't charge enough for a haircut given the location.

How much do you usually tip if any?

It's generally customary on military bases to tip your barber. It normally costs a good amount less on post than off, though, so that also runs into your third point. The last haircut I got from a barber was four years ago, but I seem to remember it costing 8-10 dollars and tipping two.

My current barber charges $15 for the works in Westfield, NJ. That's a bit under-priced for the area, and I always give his partner a $20 at the counter and tell her to keep the change.

Unless there's a problem, I always tip, same as others, cut cost $15, I'm give them $20 and call it even.

A good barber is getting harder to find here. There are only 3 barbers around where I live, all the rest are these haircut chain places, ack.

As long as i've been getting haircuts I've tipped. My father tipped when I was to young to pay for my own and I always tip now.

I give $20 every time. My old barber charged $17 I gave a $20 told him to keep it. My new guy is $14 I still give $20.

Anyone that works for tips I always tip well if their service was worth it. They remember you next time and treat you right.

I always tip $5 no matter who it is. If the cut costs more than $25, I might tip a little. It more, but $5 is always the minimum.

Max.

My haircuts are $22, I tip $5. I've been going to the same guy for 20 years. He'll go out of his way to work me in to his schedule when I call him for an appointment.

first I'm curious , you give Northern Jersey as your location & start off with the question : "do you tip in the USA" , I guess you're visiting or newly arrived ?? scratch that , international forum , duh !!!! --- anyway senior rate $15 , I give $20 .

I always tip.

I've gone to 3 barbers lately.

1 charged $13 for a cut and I gave $15
1 charged $11 for a cut and I gave $15
1 charged $50 for a cut/full straight razor shave/neck&shoulder massage/hot towels, etc and I gave $60. It was worth the extra.

The first two were single chair owner/barbers, the 3rd was one of 3 barbers in the shop and not the owner.

I've been going to the same single chair barber for the last 3 years now, he charges $12, I give him $15. He doesn't do shaves, but he will also trim up my goatee and eyebrows without asking if they need it at no extra charge. He is also a long time customer of my work (independant pet store) so I give him 10% off for being a local business owner and loyal customer.

The occasions I have gone somewhere else I have gone to a friend I have known since we were about 5 years old, he has a very successful salon with 15 occupied stations, and he never charges me but I always leave a $20 on the counter.

Nah. It just seems pretentious to assume that every member of B&B lives in the US and knows what New Jersey is. The question came up yesterday when a fellow at work mentioned he does not tip.

I always tip my barber, usually $3-4 on top of the cost of the cut. It's worth it to ensure that I always get the best service. Besides, I've been going to the same guy for years and he runs a small shop with his brother. If my tip helps keep him in business a little longer, that's good for me.

Where I go a buzz is $14 for Seniors. As they shave around the ear and neck, trim the eyebrows and any errant nose or ear hair, I tip $5-6. If they answer their cell phone while cutting, the tip gets cut in half.
