Time to Step up to a new razor

I have a Murkur 34C razor, and I would like to know is there another razor that works with a coarse bread such as mine? Does the best shave come with using a better razor? If so, what do you recommend? Or a better blade? Or technique?

Best,
Jerry

Murkur razors tend to me more aggressive than Gillette..but the idea is..the blade n razor that you use..for a Bluetip which is a mild razor due to its light blade gap..you could use a more aggressive razor..Feather or Gillette Yellows

If you had a Gillette RedTip for example and used an Israeli blue n white Personna..also very mild blade..hope this helps

Technique is more important than razor IMHO. I had a 34C and a 38C, and I think the 38C is more aggressive due to the overall weight. There's also the Slant, as well as a number of vintage Gillettes.

Which blades are you currently using?

I would go to Joris, slices like butter and irritation free.

Aggressive DE, Mild DE, adjustable DE, Slant, open comb, straight razor........I dont care which one you use. They are all capable of delivering a great shave with the right blade, or if a straight, honed properly...Technique,beard prep, and lather quality is far more important...I have an extremely coarse, heavy, wiry beard, and my daily razor was, and still is a DE89(considered a mild razor)..
I also use straights, and an r41(very aggressive)...I honestly get just as great a shave with the DE89 as with any other razor I have..I had a Merkur 23C which I believe is the same head as your 34C, and I got great shaves from that as well, but the DE89, was just a bit smoother........The way I see it, is if the razor has enough blade exposure to cut you, which most razors do, it means its close enough to shave whiskers down to the 1st layer of skin, which means capable of BBS, DFS, or anything else youre after......
The only difference is the technique, how you hold the razor, blade angle etc..varies, depending on what razor youre using..

Just my opinion of course

+ Infinity.

The "best razor in the world" will give an inferior shave in the hands of someone who doesn't know what they are doing.

Technique always always trumps hardware.

The members of this board tend to become obsessive about trying out every razor on the market, remember that when DE was KING many men went their entire lives using the same razor. You don't have to buy a new razor, if you are happy with your results a new razor will just basically be a shiny new object.

All of that said, if you are looking for suggestions, try out a Weber Razor, or a Muhle/ Edwin Jagger. The Muhle/ Edwin Jagger has a finish vastly superior to that of Merkur.

Both of these razors are good choices, to me the Weber is slightly more aggressive.

One other thought is that you could also try different blades. Some combinations of blades/razors seem to work better with different beards.

I am a R41 fan all the way just started with the Fatip not as aggressive as the R41 but still a DFS you might want to give it a try.

Sounds like you are a candidate for an OC razor or one of my favorites, the Merkur Sledgehammer Slant. As for the OC you could go with a vintage New or Old, or the modern Fatip, 2010 Muhle R41, or even the new Tradere.

+1 ... that doesn't mean you should go your whole life using just one razor. But if you can't get a good shave using what you have now, you probably won't get much better no matter what else you bring in to your shave den.

Your present 34C should be good enough, no matter what your beard is like. Try some different blades before you invest in a new razor.

My suggestions (from what I have personal experience with) are as follows:

1. Try other blades; Feather, Gillette Yellow, Astra, Super Max Super Platinum (maybe buy one pack of each).
2. Try a Merkur slant
3. If you really want something aggressive, try a Muhle R41 (for me, I found it to be too much)
4. I also like the old type Gillettes. If you look around you can find one with a good finish, or even one that has been re-plated.
