What's new

time square, 1920s

But Dave - do you realize that Ever-Ready sign could be for the flip-top and not the milder lather-catcher?!!:biggrin1:

Very cool, indeed! Auto Strop and Ever-Ready "ads" in the same shot!:thumbup1: I just pulled the blade out of an AS, I feel like putting another one in for tomorrow:001_smile

In case you weren't aware, I believe this building still exists in Manhattan:

I'll plan to take a photo of it next time I've on that side of town.

Yep but it will probably have a great big golden M on the top of it and an oversized clown sat on the end of a bench by the front door :001_tt2:

Neat!

Times Square, 1906!

CT, I saw that pristine single ring and its immaculate case and was in awe of its elegance. Looking closer, it reminds us that Times Square is associated with the New York Times Building, now located at 620 8th Avenue, between 40th and 41st Street. By coincidence, or by virtue of that strange phenomenon, if you think about this hobby obsessively and constantly as some of us do, it permeates our existence, and our imagination spills over into reality, I found myself for the first time in my life IN the Times Building this past Saturday (admitted students day for my darling college bound boy). Here is a "review" of the building when it was first open to the public in 2007.

"The architect’s goal is to blur the boundary between inside and out, between the life of the newspaper and the life of the street. The lobby is encased entirely in glass, and its transparency plays delightfully against the muscular steel beams and spandrels that support the soaring tower.

People entering the building from Eighth Avenue can glance past rows of elevator banks all the way to the fairy tale atrium garden and beyond, to the plush red interior of TheTimesCenter auditorium. From the auditorium, you gaze back through the trees to the majestic lobby space. In effect, the lobby itself is a continuous public performance."

Here are a few pics. Of course I have a fond and devoted attachment to this newspaper which while I don't always agree with its editorial leanings, I find to be the single greatest consistent source of daily knowledge and inspiration of any medium. Period.
