What's new

Time for a new razor?

A few months back I returned to wet shaving. I have several vintage Gillette TTO's .
I have been using a flair tip from the 70"s. My technique has improved a lot but lately I haven't been getting as close
of a shave as I would like. I do a three pass WTG / WTG / ATG
I am wondering if maybe its time to move on to a more aggressive razor. I have a 64 Slim adjustable. What setting should I start with?
I use Personna blades.
Any ideas?

Most people start in the 3-5 range move from there. Personally, I run both my slim and fat boy at 9 but that's me.

Maybe before you try a new razor, though, have you thought of adding an XTG in your routine? Try a WTG/XTG/ATG and see if that helps level out the stubborn stubble you are still dealing with and give you a closer shave. It may be that an adjustable would help but I never go 2 passes in the same direction. It seems pointless to me but this is IMHO ONLY.

I would probably start at a 5 on the Slim Adjustable & work your way up if it doesn't feel aggressive enough. I keep mind (I use a fat boy) around 5-6 & I always get great BBS shaves using Blue Persona blades.

It might be worth trying some different blades if you're comfortable with the razor you're using. You don't say which Personna blades you're using, and some have the reputation of being sharper than others. Feathers might be an option.

i'm using the Personna blue

AFAIK there are at least a couple of blades people call Personna Blue, and I've only used the Israeli made one. I thought it was ok, but nothing especially sharp. The US made Lab Blues might be sharper, but others will know more about this than me.

The ones I'm using are made in the USA. I get them locally at Sally's Beauty Supply

+1, unless RAD is starting to catch hold... :wink2:

As soon as I get the new blades I going to give the Slim
a try. I think I'll start out on 5
