Three New Open Tooth Razors

This is my first post here in a while. I went nuts when I started collecting and have not had to buy anything in a couple of years. I have settled into a rotation that includes a '61 Fatboy, '66 Slim and older SS and Hoffritz Travel Razor. I joined the B&B Facebook Page and lusted after some of the beautiful SOTD posts. I developed a terminal case of RAD.

I have found myself using my open tooth Hoffritz Travel Razor as the most out of my rotation over the last year. I was something that I got a lucked into a good deal in on Ebay It looked a little dumpy in the pics, but she cleaned up nice and looked like new. I tried it out then just kept using it. I especially like it if I skip shaving for a day or two. I was looking to add another open tooth to my collection. I ended up scoring a trio of them of new in box, in one lot on Ebay:

Muhle R41 2013. RazorRock Little Bastion and FaTip Piccolo. Sorry for the poor quality phone pic.

The Muhle is a beauty. The finish and fit are amazing. Thought it is not quite an open tooth.

The RazorRock gives you a lot of bang for the buck. The handle has some beef to it and feels great in the hand. Seems like a well balanced tool.

The FaTip handle seems like a throw away. The vertical texture on the handle feels slick in dry hands. Handling it with soapy hands does not sound like fun. I think I have a old Tech or Parker 91R Handle that may work with it. If it shaves as well as the reviews, I will probably invest in a nice bulldog or wave handle for it. I will check the thread on compatibility.

Now to decide which to try first!!! I will share my impressions.

But the RAD is not quite over. I am lusting after the B&B Boar Brush. The sad thing is, rather than pay for shipping, I find myself wanting to spend an extra $60 for free shipping :cursing: I also feel the urge to hit some of the Antique Malls that I just about cleaned out of DE Razors a few years ago. I may need help.

If you need help, you have come to the right place. Embrace the ADs! Who knew that an otherwise mundane daily chore could be such an adventure!
Plus, there is nothing better than a new Open Comb (or an Open Comb NEW).

A Weber or UFO handle would work nicely with any of those razors, especially the Fatip. The Fatip handle is indeed a throwaway, IMO.

I tried the FaTip with an Israeli Persona and Crema. It looked aggressive. I could see some of the P in Persona on the blade.

I felt smooth after a 1 pass WTG. I probably could have quit after that. I did a second pass ATG and a couple of touch ups. My face is a little red and irritated in a couple of spots. I had one small weeper. The handle is junk. When going ATG I felt is wanting to slip. I gripped it harder than I would like. It may have effected my technique. If I could do it over, I would have done a couple of touch ups on my neck where the growth direction is kind of funny. And in hind sight, a balm would have worked better than Florida Water.

After one pass it felt great. Would work great for those mornings where you are running late and only want to do a single pass. While to price is good, the handle is junk. I think I have something that will work better. But lets say you spend another $40 on a handle and all the sudden you are in the $65 range. You could by a Merkur 1904, a Semogue Brush, 100 Astra blades and an Arko Stick on Amazon.

I need a few more shaves, but with a new handle I thing it will work it's way into the rotation.

I have to have one of those Fattip razors, how does it shave?

Moderately aggressive, with a somewhat smaller range of effective blade angles than some other razors (e.g., the R41). For that reason it takes some getting used to, and you may find in the beginning that it's either not cutting at all or nipping you when you least expect it. But relax; that passes. Once you get your groove, it gives an exceptionally smooth and effective shave. It's the razor I use 95% of the time; I have 4 of them, which I pair with Weber or UFO handles.

Shaved with my Fatip Grande this morning and an Astra SP. Allow no pressure and a little time and the result is smooth, close no weepers, nicks or irritation. :thumbup1:

Love my FaTip head with either the Tradere or my UFO head.
Very efficient and yet very smooth. Be careful under the nose. Gentle touch does the trick.

I have FaTip also. It was ok until I changed the handle to a Weber Bulldog. Holy t-shirts, made it into a civilized, effective razor! That's what did it for me.

VERY nicely but a little on the aggressive side. Just sort of the R41 though.

I picked up a Piccolo a few weeks ago just to add the head to my "free range head" choices.

They are not as "pretty" as the Joris but the shave is very much the same.

Second shave with the FaTip went a little better. It is much more aggressive than what I am used to. I tried to put the Parker 91R handle on it, but it wont work. More of the blade is exposed on one side than the other. There was not as much iritation this time around. It takes getting used to, but sure gives a close shave.

The RazoRock was up today also with Cella and an Israeli Persona. The handle is much nicer. I like the weight and feel. I would call it very similar to the FaTip. They are both aggressive. You get a close shave, but I am getting weepers. My Hoffritz isn't as close, but it is a lot more forgiving. I got some Astras. Maybe will try a different blade in them.

The FaTip has a tendency to allow the blade to load unevenly. Don't let it. Take a few extra seconds when loading a blade and make sure the blade is straight and the exposure even on both sides when you tighten it down. This will likely cut down on weepers, irritation.

+1 great advice.
