Thoughts on Thinning the Herd

I Have recently discovered the greatness of the Open Comb, the Gillette New short comb in first place and the long comb a close second. The OC just gets real close with out irritation, the face has not felt better! I will be placing an order for a Bull Mastiff with re plated heads in the near future as well. Now I have some other Razors that are not in the active rotation and at one point were the front line, A 40's SS, Rocket Flair Tip, and a Rocket HD. I think that is the order I would rank them as well. I'm thinking of putting the Rockets up for B/S/T....or will I regret it down the line? I just do not know if they will be used much for a while or will I evolve back into them? I did let go of the Merkur HD and Gillette Red Tip, so what are Your thoughts?

I've let go of superspeeds, all my Merkurs, except for a Slant and a couple of heads for Tech razors....all the Fat-boys, Slim Adjustable, TV specials and a couple of Tech Rangers from 1941. I thin out the herd on a regular basis as I find the razors that work for me in my rotation.

My go to razors are....Red Tip 1955 superspeed, Slant head razor, Gillette and Merkur Tech heads for a ikon Bulldog handle, 46-47 Aristocrat.

I still have some Schick Eversharp Injector razors, Personna Titanium injector razor and a Few Gem razors and some Gillette Metal Atra Handles that I will also hold onto for the future.

Cheers.:001_smile

If you end up missing them you can always pick up another later. I say sell.

What I do is buy first, sell second.
If you sell something first, then have to buy it back again it's a bummer.

In reality unless you are a collector displaying them, and just a regular, shaver, you probably only need 3 - 4 razors for variety.

May as well thin the herd.

At one time I had over a dozen DE's. Now I'm down to just 4, and that's probably where I'll stay. I see no need for more and I'm content with what I have and use. As for the one's that I got rid of? I don't miss them one bit. :thumbup1:

If you don't use them I'd sell them to someone who will. There are only so many vintage razors out there. They should be used IMHO.

I would say sell but hang on to the 40s SS, that may be the main one you would regret selling off. Or maybe wait a few months, go back to them and see if you do still like them for the occasional shave.

Thanks for the input. I think I will let go of one or two. I will have to figure out which one of the Rockets.

It's a tough call.. If you got duplicates or more, than I would sell. You never know down the road how you are gonna feel and may want to give ur flare tip or other SS another run.

Hang onto anything that cannot be easily reacquired. Anything else, sell. If you find yourself missing it, you can always get another.

I've done a lot of selling and buying and I have to say, my last big den cleaning sale is coming this weekend. After it I will have:

1 Gem Bullet Tip Micromatic
1 Muhle R89
50 Ted Pella Blades
100 Shark Blades
1 Tabac Puck in Bowl
1 Irisch Moos Stick
2 Tubes 444 ASB
1 Straight

Thats it. End of story.

I could easily get rid of three quarters of my current collection, and still have a sample of everything I really want to shave with.

Standing in the way are two facts. I really dislike selling my stuff in a way that I can't explain to anyone who doesn't feel the same way. And it doesn't bother me at all to have extra stuff lying around unused for a long time. I never buy anything with the idea of unloading it on someone else when I don't want it.

That's not advice. Just saying it all comes down to personal preference.
