Thoughts on Mineral Oil Use

I understand that going the shaving route that we have done saves us so much more money on blades than with cartridges. But I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on the idea of soaking the razor in a small amount of mineral oil so that the blade will last even longer.

If you think about it, this scheme doesn't save much money, if any. Instead of buying extra blades, you're buying mineral oil for soaking! Plus you have to factor in the loss of time transferring the blade to and from the vat of oil each day. Just doesn't seem to me like it pays off.

Not to mention all of the time needed to rinse that oil off of the razor. And the fuel costs needed to heat the water to be able to rinse the oil off the razor. It's a slippery slope. No pun intended.

This topic (even in my brief DE career) is beginning to remind me of "Whack a mole" at the carnival, just keeps popping up.

With the cost of blades being so low I don't see any benefit to the mineral oil. But then if its working for you and you don't mind the process, who's to say you're wrong. :001_rolle

Modern razor blades are made of a chromium nickel alloy steel better known to us as stainless steel. If you just rinse them off and shake dry, do not wipe them on anything, they will resist corrosion for a far longer time than any possible number of shaves you can get. Unless you soak them in a salt water brine exposed to the air, it will take around 3 months or so for the chromium barrier to decay enough for corrosion to begin. If you shave every day well you might get 90 shaves out of a blade but probably not. don't knock yourself out, just get 3 or 4 shaves and toss'em, by that point you aren't even saving a nickel a shave, bc
