Thoughts on Lather

Just curious what you guys think of this. Could you live with it everyday?

Thanks for looking and giving your opinion!

Hey Paul,
I thought you were a tallow guy. That lather looks more like a glycerin based soap. Am I correct? It looks airy and bubbly not dense and creamy. However, that is a nice amount of lather.

It's not one of my favorites, to be sure. But it didn't dry out over the course of the shave... Like I said, I'm just curious to know if you would take this over canned goo.

It does look airy, but I've seen many of my tallow soaps look that way too. Sometimes they just don't "explode". For instance, my Cella soap this morning was very thin and airy on the 2nd and 3rd passes. But, it still provided the cushion and slickness I needed.

So I guess to answer the question, if the lather worked, it doesn't matter how pretty it is.

I would take anything over canned goo but that lather definitely doesn't look slick. Be careful

For sure over canned goo! Looks decent to me, Paul, although most of my lathers (from my favorites of course) are a little more opaque. Do tell which variety! Somehow, I think you're setting us up, LOL.

Well, I more than likely WOULD take it over canned foam, but, for the B&B thats a specious argument  Is it better than the best? Thats the B&B question! hahah.

Its always hard to tell about a lather except for the basics, my impression of the lather is it looks a little "soft" and wetish. It does not seem to have firm, self supporting peaks. I suspect what soap it is, as a few others have posted similar photos with the same characteristics.

Honestly, that is what Krissy's soaps lathered like for me prior to a) my working out the water ratio and b) the soap curing a bit. I stuck with it on the soap and have been rewarded. Don't let the soap beat you, Paul!

Thinking about it more, how a lather looks doesn't always have anything to do with how it shaves. I've made lather that looks worse than that that shaved great! That's really what we should be asking you, Paul. How'd it shave?

Looks a little on the thin side to me, especially for a first pass. That said, lather consistency is probably one of the biggest "YMMV" topics here, second only to DE blades.

As Jim has stated before, he prefers lather comparable to "yogurt" as oppose to "whipped cream" .......that's what I shoot for. I can get that with some glycerin soaps, but tallow's where it's at for me.

It's hard to tell from the photos, but it looks a little on the thin side to me. Maybe it needs more product and less water? I usually like to try to face lather to the heavy meringue, marshmallow fluff consistency that tallow soaps do so well (of course, without the stickiness that those metaphors imply). So my answer to your question, assuming that this is the best lather you can get from this particular soap, would be "no."

Enjoy!

Fine, but not great

After the very first attempt, you'd dump it in favor of canned goo?

Maybe I misread the original question. I would not dump it in favor of canned goo after the first attempt (or any attempt, for that matter). But, if that was the best I could do after 2 or 3 attempts, I would dump it in favor of one of the many wonderful soaps already in my rotation.

Besides, your second attempt looks much more like it, so the question may already be moot. :001_smile

EDIT: I didn't misread the original question -- your first post asked simply whether or not we could live with the depicted lather every day. My answer to THAT question was "no."
