What's new

This oldie-and-goodie gives a heck of a good shave.

I shaved with it yesterday with an Iridium and it was very, very good.
3 passes, very close, and no mishaps....
Well, not exactly. When I first started the shave, I had forfotten to tighten down the head and I was amazed at how aggressive it was. I had heard that they were pretty aggressive, but this was extreme. Then I saw my mistake and it was golden from then on.

One thing I noticed was that the head and base plate ?, are very, very shiny and unmarked. Possibly replated ?

None-the-less, it's a definite keeper.

Oh yeah, what is the name for the under-the-head plate ?

thanks

Quite a few (myself included) call it the base plate, both on three-piece razors and the equivalent part on a TTO as well. The other part is generally called the top cap. Together, they make up the head.

Amazing how well those Old-Types shave with modern blades. The original instructions indicated that the razor could be loosened slightly to provide a more aggressive shave.

BigFoot

I wanna be sedated!
I have tried that with my new. It makes it way more aggressive. I would not recommend loosening the head unless you really know what you are doing.

I like something about all the razors I have...even the Parker that got thrown in with some blades I bought.

However, a strong case can be made that Gillette got it right with their first effort, and everything since has been bells, whistles and gimmicks that really don't offer much in the way of a better shave.

Nicely stated, Top!! (and true, too)

My open comb Old Types give me some of the best shaves of all my vintage razors. I love mowing down 4-day growth with them.

+1 my ball-end Old Type is my favorite DE (more of a SE guy though). Many thanks to the above _MementoMori_, who put it on the BST for a great price.

The OP's razor does look a whole lot nicer though....no visible cracks...simply gorgeous.
