Thinking of ordering a scuttle

It's starting to get a little cooler here in the Northeast US and my lather is getting cold by the end of the shave and I do not like it. I think I'm going to be buying a DB scuttle. The only thing I have to decide is whether I want a 1.5X or 2Xs oversize scuttle. I normally make my lather in a cereal bowl and recently just bought a lather bowl from DB. While I like the ridges I find the bowl to be a little too small in diameter and height for my liking. The oversize scuttles would fit the bill just right.

I've ruled out Georgetown because I feel their scuttle will be too small. The price to ship a Bonneyman scuttle is too cost prohibitive to me, so that was ruled out, too.

I'd be interested to here from anyone that has an oversize DB scuttle and what you like or dislike about it.

Thanks,

Steve.

I don't have a scuttle yet, but I too am thinking of going with a DB one (brush scuttle - I face lather exclusively). If you haven't yet done so, check out the reviews section for info. You might also email DB with your question. From what I've read here, she's great about giving advice, and who would know better how to solve your problem that the person who made both your current bowl and your prospective scuttle?

What size is your lather bowl? I bought the 2X scuttle from Julie a few months ago and LOVE it! Julie is GREAT to work with as well. The lather bowl in my scuttle is 5" across the top and 4" deep with horizontal & vertical grooves in brown-based glaze. I ordered the 2-piece design in order to allow removal of the bowl from the scuttle itself. I've been using the lather bowl by itself through the summer months. Julie also makes the 1-piece design which basically means the lather bowl is glued into the scuttle. As for pros and cons, I see it like this:

Pros: The bowl of my 2X is plenty big enough for lathering with larger brushes as well as my smaller ones. The 2-piece design allows for easy removal for using the lather bowl by itself. When used with the scuttle, it provides nice warm lather. I found that using boiling water deteriorates the lather when used immediately, so I pour boiling water in the open scuttle bowl and let it sit on the counter for about 15 minutes to cool down. I then place the lather bowl into the scuttle and start lathering. This has worked very well for me without breaking down the lather. Aesthetically, no matter the chosen color, it is a beautiful work of art!

Cons: This scuttle is HUGE! There is no way of holding it while lathering unless you have arms and hands the size of the HULK. It has to sit on the counter while lathering, but I have no problem with that. Also, the 2-piece design allows the lather bowl to "rattle" a little bit while sitting in the scuttle. The 1-piece design alleviates this. I have seen where one person bought the 1-piece design and an extra lather bowl the same as the one in the scuttle.

Thanks for the replies. I've read the reviews awhile ago, but should probably revisit them. I've yet to actually measure my lather bowl, the DB lather bowl sits completely inside of it. I'm leaning towards the two piece 2X size. I like the idea of being able to build lather while holding the bowl and then putting it in the water to keep it warm. I guess when I build my lather I make large circles because ever since I got the DB lather bowl I've been banging the snot out of my brush handles. That's partially what I'm trying to avoid. Plus, I like to make a lot of lather. Enough for four or five passes.

I have just recently acquired a Dirty Bird 1.5 scuttle. For me it is the perfect size. The bowl itself is just about the size of large cappuccino cup. I use a 23mm knot brush and it creates the perfect amount of lather. Also, when filled with water, it is heavy enough to lather while resting on the counter. No need to hold it.
