Thinking of buying a Merkur 38C Barber Pole - advice

Hi Guys,

I have an EJ DE89L and a Gillette Slim 1962, however I am currently smitten by the 38C , is it worth it or am I just addicted to buying stuff...

The Barbers Pole was the first (and only) razor I've ever purchased. Granted I've only been going at it for 5 or so months I havent found the need to purchase anything else.... Yet. I really like it. Quality is nice feels great. I could see my self using it for a long time. Having said that i've never used any other form of DE razor so I can't give a comparison!

I only use my 38 HD Cs. I have 2, one for home and one for travel. I have tried several other razors, but my 38 HD Cs are the most pleasurable to use and give great shaves.

the options are mutually exclusive, that is, I believe it is worth it and you could also possibly be addicted to buying stuff... just buy it, you'll love it!

Not a lot of difference I hear between the 34/38 and EJDE89. If you are looking for something that will offer a shave of equal quality to your DE89, delivered in the same manner, proceed to buy. It's one more option to play with.

You are probably on your way to getting addicted to buying stuff, but I do like the 38C. It has a 4" handle which I like (the 34C has the same head and the handle is 3").

Actually my favorite DE razor is the 39C (Slant).

Love mine

The Gillette silve blue blades seem to work really well for me in this razor. Close and gentle

Got 50 of these blades by accident recently, ordered 100 Green 7 Oclocks and the Silver Blue's arrived! Greens are now on the way. Yep I too get a good shave with the Silver Blue's but gotta say, ordered a 10 pack of Personna Reds the other day and I reckon these are even better! Give em a go!

Check out the 39c. Slants are amazing!

The 38C in blue was the first razor I bought when I started this. Now out of about 10 razors, I think it is still my favorite. I agree it matches really well the the Gillette Silver Blue, which is my favorite blade.

I purchased an EJ DE89 and I didn't like it. I ended up selling it on BST. Something about it wasn't right. Either the weight or the balance. Or more likely, it was all in my head.

I have a 38C and 39C and a long handled Progress. They are all wonderful to shave with. Do what I did. Save up and get all three. LOL BTW, yes you are addicted.

Dave:
In my opinion, the 38C (I also own the 23C), is moderately priced, is heavy (4oz...let the razor do the work), and two (2), piece. The 38C is long handled and great for those who have 'bear claws'

for hands, (3½in), and again...in my opinion...is fairly mild and very smooth (I use Voskhod...my one & only 'go-to' blades), straight bar/closed combed razor which is perfect for my normal beard and sensitive skin.

Hey…what can I say…for $35.00 (used, but in ‘mint’ condition from a B & B member), including shipping…I’d say I got a real good deal. Also, what makes the 38C so attractive is that the razor is almost half of the retail price new :thumbup1:

Quality: Rating 9

This attractive ‘classic style’ Razor has a straight bar (has been said to be ideal for my ‘sensitive’ skin), closed comb, non-adjustable 2-piece unit. I have been using this Razor for months now and I’m really pleased with this Razor. Although not Stainless Steel like a Feather Razor (which I do not own), the chrome plating on this razor and cutting head is applied well with no noticeable spots of uneven coating.

User Friendly: Rating 9
I believe one the best aspect of this Razor is the weight. Although a monster :letterk1: at 4.0 oz, it’s a real ‘ultra-heavy weight’, which is a ‘plus’ for ease of my daily shave.

Grip: Rating 9
The ‘non-slip tooling’ grip on this Razor is very ‘sure’ even when wet and the handle is long enough to ‘fit’ even the Wet-Shaver with ‘Bear Claws’

for hands. With a handle length of 3½in (for better shaving reach and mobility), this is the neatest thing about this Razor…it just feels perfect in my hand.

Ease of Blade Replacement: Rating 8

The ease of Blade replacement is ‘quick, easy and flawless’ (but please do be careful  ), with the 2-piece ‘sandwich type’, ‘load / change’ system operating with no slippage and/or creakiness’ and the razor head unit is ‘tight’ when closed using the knob on the end.

Aggressiveness: Rating 8

This Razors performance in terms of aggressiveness is outstanding, depending on the ‘angle’ you use. The cutting action of the razor is a bit more aggressive than I expected due to its heavy feel as I held the razor by the’ knob’, but the 38C delivered a solid shaving performance. By far, with care it is neither too aggressive nor too mild (it is just a 'tad more aggressive than my Merkur 23C).

Adjustability: Rating 8

The blade on both sides of the razor head unit excels in that it is evenly exposed.

Balance: Rating 9

This ‘Barber Pole’ razor is beautiful to say the least and a ‘beauty to behold’. It’s heavy enough not to affect the balance and in my opinion it is a very well made and enjoyable razor to use.
