Thinking about getting a fountain to sign autographs. Pen's, Ink, NIB recommendations

Hello Fellows,

I am looking into fountain pens for signing autographs on our band's CD liner-notes. I was wondering if you all have recommendations for a starter pen, inks that are good on glossy color paper, and nibs.

My name is pretty long and the Sharpe's are a little low-rent. I want to make it more special.

Thank you

I'm betting most inks that will flow though a FP are gonna smudge like crazy on glossy paper. Maybe one of Noodlers Bullet Proof inks? I don't think FP's were designed with autographing CD liners in mind.

Now half as wise
I agree, as much as it pains me. If these will be done ahead of time, so the ink has time to dry, it might work. If it's on the spot after a concert, I suspect there will be a lot of fans with smudged autographs. You might look into some of the refillable rollerballs that allow you to use whatever ink desired.

If it does work, I'd suggest a M nib if you have a long name and want it legible. If it's a "classic" scribble, then B and write big and bold.

I'd experiment around a little bit before the actual time of use, though. Good luck.

I bet that some of the FP wizards will be able to pick the perfect pen for you but I think that I'd just go with a Sharpie and be done with it.

Ordered the candy stripe, if I don't like it I will put a red sharpie in it and give it to my wife, she is a teacher.

I wonder if a preppy will fit?

Maybe a Varsity? They have a compatibility list on their website.
Now I want one.

Dang.

Functionally, it's not really my thing, but the cigar Sherpa set looks pretty cool. Nice find. I would also recommend the sharpie route for signing glossy paper. Fountain pen ink just isn't designed for that purpose. Definitely get a nice pen and some ink, though. You'll find plenty of uses for one in your life.

Why does it pain everybody so much when they have to agree with me? :001_tt2:

Thanks Marc, I ordered the candy stripe, I wanted something a little whimsical, plus I knew my wife and kids would like it.
It came with a sharpie, and I picked up a uniball vision. Arrived today and tried several of my fountain pens, but only the Snorkel fit. The also sell a fountain pen refills.

After playing with this for a bit, I can not see me using it to hide my Sheaffer, or using it for any pen really other than a highlighter or sharpie. I think that is where the sherpa shines. I use a sharpie at work often, but a dedicated highlighter is a possibility too.

They look nice. Do you think they'd fit a highlighter?
If so, i'm warming up my Paypal account....

Thank you all for your advice. I have just returned from a trip performing on the American Queen Steamboat and have placed an order for a Sherpa and a chisel tip Sharpie. I will let you know how it works out.

good call!! those Sherpa cases are very sharp!!

sharpies are perfect for signing anything - especially glossy 8X10s and CD booklets. speaking from experience, you may want to keep the sherpa handy but also get a pack of silver ink sharpies for signing things. the silver shows up on most anything (often black ink won't - depending on what you are signing ) and if you are in a situation where lots of items are being signed at once, and fans are present - you won't bat an eye at losing a sharpie or two, but losing that sherpa case would suck! :)

when I was active in management I bought cases of silver sharpies at a time - made sure the merch team always had a handful.

they also make mini sharpies with a keychain on em, my old lead singer used to keep one on his belt at all times. crazy what he used to sign with that LOL

While assigned to the Executive Protection Unit of the Atlanta Police Department, I privided security for very many celebrities and VIP's. I came to realize that there was a reason for their using inexpensive pens. Their pens disappeared with shocking speed (souvenirs) I have a framed '96 Olympic poster signed by then Mayor, Maynard Jackson, Chairman of the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games and Rev. Andrew Young. Mayor jackson and Mr. Payne signed with Sharpies and Rev. Young with some other felt tip. The first 2 are still clear and crisp, but Rev. Young's has faded terribly. Therefore, I go with the Sharpie.

You can use the fountain pen to sign your billion dollar record contract when your band breaks down and sells out to the man.
