What's new

Thinking about buying a new strop as a Newb str8 user...

Somebody talk me out of it...

BearDen gave me a GREAT starter strop...which is really all I need to start out...why do I want the sexiest one in latigo with handles as well?

Help!!!:scared:

Don't do it.

Keep using the one you have.
When you have stropped your razor for 3 months daily on that strop without nicking it, then buy the nice one.

But that's just me.

Man, it's only money. Just buy what you like right now. Even experienced people nick their strops, and odds are you'll change tastes in the future, so you may want to buy another one eventually.

I have been very happy with my TM strop and thought it was worth every penny and I try to be as frugal as possible. Just get the practice strop which is an extra 8 dollars. Its no frill, but a solid good piece of leather.

My pre-honed 6/8 Dovo Tortoise Special and Lynn Abram's DVD should arrive this week from SRD. About the same time, the Filly Strop from Rup Razor should get here from Texas, but I want to shave with the razor as the edge comes from SRD to see how it should feel, before I potentially mess it up with a strop. If I don't destroy the strop, that's going to be my K.I.S.S setup for awhile (I have some backup packs of CrO coming from Chris on SRP).

Another thing to think about is that if you nick the strop, you can get a replacement part for just a little more than a Filly. FWIW, SRD Premium IV English Bridle might be edging out my TM Horsehide/linen strop at the moment... It's seriously good :001_smile

I'd tell you to get yourself a Tony Miller red latigo, but I think he's on vacation for a while. You can always drool over one on his site until he is back.

Start with one and then get another one when ready...

While not near the cost of an entirely new strop, a 3" SRD Latigo replacement strip will set you back $35, a 3" Premium 1 $45, and a 3" Premium $50--all way more than a Filly. Replacement is $5 more than a Filly only if you get a 2" wide SRD.

yes, but I'm not thinking about percentages. I've used the Filly and the difference in price is well worth the difference IMHO. Additionally, before that post, I verified the availablility and price of the leather replacements available. I stand by it.

Here's the link for SRD replacement leather strop. People can see for themselves how much it's going to cost with the "Choose your leather" option.

ok... but you already listed that information. No one is arguing with you about that; I'm just saying it's "just a little more than a Filly" (talking real dollars not percentages) which is what I said previously. The difference in leather quality more than makes up for the difference. Additionally, the leather on those 2" strops are significantly better IMHO, so if you want to do true apples to apples, the deal is even better. :wink2:

The Filly leather is decent, but if I'm not really recommending it as a beginner strop anymore because it will almost certainly be replaced while the others MAY need to be replaced due to excessive nicks. Meh... I'd rather have a nice strop that has a cloth component than worry about that.

Wow Paul, that is saying alot. You certainly got my attention...:001_smile I know how nice a broken in TM Horsehide/linen strop is...:wink2:
How do you like the webbed backing ?
Do you prefer a 3" over a 21/2" ?

The webbed backing feels much different, and I didn't expect to like it at first. However, the performance is really good, and it's winning me over. Normally, I prefer the 2 1/2", but this has been very very nice.
