they took my feather blade!!

I'm so pissed off. I forgot to put my feather blade into my checked in bag. They found it in the xray. So i though, well no problem, i'll just take out the blade and be gone.

But no, they had to throw it away :( i even tried going back and put it into a storage closet but they forbid me because i already passed the customs. I was really between a rock and a hard place. But i'm still wondering, shouldn't a feather handle without the blade be allowed? i showed them it wasn't lethal but they said it was a component and needed to be disposed :(

Ahh man, that really sucks. I have accidently taken a forbidden item beyond checkin but they let me leave and go outside checkin so that I could post it to myself. In my case, customs was not involved. Sorry you had to lose your feather.

Regarding the "safety razors" exception, there is some interpretation required of the term "safety razor", and this interpretation has led some individuals to assume that a DE or SE razor is allowed as a carry on item, even with the blade installed in the razor.

* "Safety razor" meaning cartridge razors or cartridge-shaped disposable razors (Mach 3, Bic Sensitive, and the like) are allowed in carry on luggage. Such razors (with very narrow blades held in a cartridge or head that prevents any deep cut) would be nearly impossible to use as a weapon.
* "Safety razor" meaning DE or SE (with no blade installed) are apparently allowed since there is no way to cut or harm someone with such an item.
* "Safety razor" meaning DE or SE (with blade in) are prohibited: in a safety sense, the removable or loose disposable blades are no different than a box cutter. The blade could be removed and then used to harm someone.

Sounds like you weren't treated correctly. Was this USA Customs?

I don't understand - did you have to throw the blade away, or the razor as well? Truly sucks if they made you throw the razor away.

I've been stopped for having a razor in my carry-on bag, but I had unloaded the blade beforehand, so they let me through.

You just got f'd over then. They most likely kept the razor for themselves. I hope it wasn't a Feather AS.

If you are traveling by air for only a few days, pack everything in your carry-on, while observing all the carry on rules and regs.

Or what you may want to consider is, to ship your luggage in advance of your trip, to your destination.

I have no idea of what the cost might be.

Just a thought.

Sorry they took your razor. I recently took a DE (sans blade) on a trip and they didn't blink. I had it disassembled in the bag, too, so it was obvious that there was no blade.

Of course, one of the security guards might have had an eye on your nice razor and "interpreted" the rules to get his hands on it.

This is why anything I am not willing to part with stays at home.

Sorry about the razor =(

A friend bought some Spanish Floid & Italian Floid for me. On the way back to the states, he put them in his carry on. Big mistake, I never saw either of them.... Confiscated at the security check point.

nope, Thai customs. And yes, this was precisely what i thought. I also showed them trying to cut my arm that it is totally save, but they kept me there and said i couldn't go forwards or backwards so i needed to loose the item.
Considering the tensions and the uprising in Thailand, the Thai Government will step up to demand "greater enforcement to maintain order." Of course the guards can use this to provide "enhanced latitude" to more than likely procure your blade and razor.

Sorry that this happened.

They wanted your razor, plain and simple. They probably take turns recovering the latest gift from the Ferangs in the "destroy" bin.

Well of course they took your razor. Even if you tossed the blade, you could always get another one later, load it into your weapon, and kill someone with it.

I'm truly sorry about your loss. Thai customs are different, of course, but this looks like it was made possible by the same minds that brought you the nail clipper ban. I feel your pain.

Every 2 weeks i have to hop on a plane and i have learned one thing. No 2 TSA wokers are alike. Do not put anything in the bin with your shoes. Do not put your shoes in a bin. Etc. I actually feel like a criminal while this is going on. I have a TWIC card which all Merchant Mariners have to get. it is issued by TSA and yet not all TSA workers will accept it as proper ID. the TWIC card is TSA's answer to 9/11. It all depends on what worker you get that day.

Sometimes those Bozo's at the TSA treat people like Nazi Gestapo. Its almost as if they think they have to justify their abuse of power. :thumbdown

I've seen the screening process for the TSA people. It's ludicrous and idiotic. They go out of their way to hire the ignorant and easily programmable.

Several of us who went through the screening were all rejected at the same stage. The only thing we had in common was law enforcement training and background.

Makes me think...

While I feel for your loss of an expensive razor, I don't think it very wise to take a $150 razor on vacation in a foreign country in the first place.

I would have taken something low cost like a well used Tech, or a $10 Feather Portable. :tongue_sm

Anything to stop you rendering it unusable before it gets handed over? If I get anything confiscated that could be at all valuable to anyone, I'd want to see it damaged beyond repair either by my own hand or by the security person. After all, if it's just in the interest of ensuring you don't take it on the plane, why should they mind?

I'm going to assume the original poster is talking about the actual razor, not the blade. In that case that really really really sucks.

Of course, the op is talking about a foreign country, but the TSA doesn't have the ability to confiscate anything. If they don't allow something through then they give you the option of going back to the check it at the counter or give it to a friend, etc. When you can't do anything else they throw it away for you.
