What's new

There was no way a SE was going to shave as close/smooth as my Single Ring!

I was determined to prove all the SE advocates wrong and try shaving with a SE. I was sure it was impossible to get as close and smooth a shave as I get with my Gillette Single Ring that I love, (and the topper was I use Gillette 7 O'Clock blacks...no "scraper blade" will be able to get that close/smooth.)
Well, I waited till my EverReady 1912 arrived so no one would say I didn't use a decent razor. Tried it out this morning with a GEM carbon steel blade. I used Palmolive shave cream, and my ER silvertip restored brush. The results were nothing short of amazing! It took a little while to get the angle right, but the learning curve was much less than any DE has ever been. The shave was BBS, and I only nicked myself once on the throat near my Adam's apple, (a notoriously bad spot for me anyways.). I am completely shocked at how great a shave it gave! I will give it a few more tries to make sure it is the norm. I may be a total convert to SE's now. Thank you to all the fine people here for offering up so much good information. It made it so easy to get it right. I am totally in love with my gold EverReady 1912! I look forward to many great shaves with this and other razors I am awaiting delivery.
I am very happy to be proven wrong in this endeavor! How is no one producing these amazing razors anymore?! If anyone knows of a better, (sharpest/smoothest), razor blade...please let me know!

Welcome to the club. There are a lot of great vintage SE options out there.

As far as current production, maybe petitioning Tradere and the others to make a single edge head as an option with their other offerings. That would be sweet if done right.

Welcome to the dark side :001_smile

I like the GEM stainless steel PTFE coated blades better as they seem smoother to me. I find that when I use a carbon blade (and I DO use them) that once I break it open I have to shave every day in a row for a couple of weeks with that bade otherwise the edge goes sour on me. Since I like shaving with a different razor every day that limits me to my 10 SE razors and this is jut not enough variety for me which is why 99% of the time I grab the PTFE coated stainless SE blade as it does not mind sitting on the counter for a week while I play with my DE and injector razors.

It would be nice if someone made a modern SE razor. I would line up to be one of the first customers!!!!

Most of the patents have run out on the SE designs so there should not be any worries about infringement as all of them are well over 20 years old now

I took your recommendation and bought a 50 pack of the GEM SS coated SE razors. Many thanks!

Is there a difference betwee the drugstore GEM SS blades and the PTFE coated ones? I seem to have a slight preference for the carbon steel blades but don't like the extra hassle/handling in the morning.

And +howevermany on a "modern" SE. One machined in solid brass would be awesome

Just a slight update. I have since bad a few shaves with my gold ER 1912, and I have to say each has been as close, smooth, and amazing as that first. No nicks or weepers. No razor burn. I am really loving this. I have since bought a few more ER SE razors on eBay, including a very ornate cased lather-catcher. (I can't wait to get that and try it out.)

Looks like you are hooked.

Wait till you try a Cobra. You will toss even your SE razors out the window after experiencing that one :001_smile

12 hours since using mine and still BBS even when stretching and LOOKING for stubble. I hate using it as I can't shave every day because there is nothing to shave the next day.

Yesterday's shave. I guess today will be one of my mild razors to just touch up back to BBS (or no shave at all today)

Maybe one day. They seem to be tough to come by. (By which, I mean I can't justify the price of one.)
