The ultimate Shavemac brush

I've read great things about the 177 and the D01. I've used a 177 that was far too big and a D01 that was too small so I don't know have a proper reference point on either. I've heard that the ideal Shavemac is a 23mm knot with a 50mm loft. I'm pretty sure that I could custom order either to those specs but I'm hoping there is someone who has played with both that could tell me which route to explore. I don't face lather as my neck is very sensitive but I don't have any issue with the increased backbone of the D01 that I've used. I did send the fine folks at Shavemac an email in regard to this a week ago but I have yet to hear back.

Nothing? I figured being that both brushes are very popular that I would have something by now. I'd also like to specify, I'm looking for a brush that screams luxury. I will also be ordering a Duke 3 in best for those days where I want to scrub away at my face, so from the Shavemac, I want it to be super soft but not floppy.

Well over here in the UK my kent BK8 cost £80 ($125)
My custom Shavemac cost 100 euros ($126)

And that's just silvertip hair, not D01. If you want D01, you're going to pay a premium, is it worth it?

The Kent is bigger and more luxurious than the Shavemac, and has a VERY comfortable handle design. I have a sensitive neck, and I can say the Kent feels softer than the Shavemac, perhaps because of it's slightly floppy nature.

See here. My 21mm D01 with 50mm loft is incredible. I wouldn't want a bigger brush, but your "ideal" will just depend on what you like.

D01 for $121.88 (20mm diameter/50mm loft... and a great deal). Bernd will set this with any loft you like. Just email him about it. He can be slow to respond, especially if he's on vacation, ill, has a big order he's working on, etc. It's also a very small business you're dealing with.

To put price in perspective, I paid $150 for my 21mm/50mm D01 a year and a half ago. D01 is much more reasonably priced now. I'd take a Shavemac over a Kent any day, but that's me. I don't like floppy brushes (at all). You should also really consider Finest and Silvertip if you're interested in saving some money. They're both exceptional hair grades.

I own this brush. Pictured is a 23mm D01 with a 50mm loft. I think I requested it with an extra dense knot.

It is the one of the left in the second shot next to a Chubby 2 Best. I still have the D01, it is my favorite brush. I no longer own the Chubby 2.:biggrin1:

The Chubby 2 had to go because I just found it too big (28mm). It has been replaced with a Polo 8 2-band which I enjoy immensely but if I had to rate them the Shavemac would be number 1.

I've got a 25mm custom D01 and I love it. That things is dense. I like 23-25mm range. Bigger is too big for me. Of course, you pay a bit more for D01 and custom, but IMO, it is worth every penny. There's about 7 more grams of silvertip in a 25mm D01 compared to a regular silvertip of same size.

Having said that, I think the regular Silvertip Shavemac (23mm or 24mm for me) work perfectly well and don't become a lather hog like the D01. You can save yourself some $$ in the process too.

Just my $.02

I'm really tempted to get a big custom D01 in silvertip with a horn handle...

But I've been wetshaving a month, and I've really got to chill out on the brush buying.

I also need a nicer bathroom to house that thing.

I've decided that 23mm knot with a 50mm loft is probably ideal for me. My only tie up now is do I go with their standard silvertip or hit up the d01. I'm leaning more towards the standard silvertip as at the same time I'll be ordering a very dense Duke 3. For the gentlemen with both, which would you say you walk away with feeling like you had a more luxurious shave with? I'm a bit concerned with the brush being a lather hog as the 28mm Shavemac I have sucks the lather right up and doesn't like letting it go.
