"The Real Safety" Straight Razor

A couple of weeks ago the wife and I were browsing through a local antique mall, which had a surprising amount of shaving gear scattered throughout it. Unfortunately most of it was pretty generic, and many of the blades were in lousy condition, but I did run across what I thought was a rather interesting find:

Of course, I bought it. As you can see, it's a nice little fixed blade straight razor with an early "safety razor" guard. I've seen similar items before, but usually on more traditional straights. Out of curiosity, has anyone else run across a similar fixed-blade razor or have any information about this particular model? The box, sadly, gives no information about the maker of the razor so I don't know how old it is, but I would certainly be interested in finding out more about it. Having recenently recieved my first coti for honing I sharpened up the edge and it gave me a fine shave (without the safety guard attached).

Hi, I could be wrong but it looks like an attachment for hair cutting - I think they use it to feather out the hair in a Jennifer Aniston kind of cut. And before anyone asks my mum was a hairdresser and I found out this weekend that she used to have a load of straights from her grandfather that she used for hairdressing and guess what, yes she threw them out! Damn it, why didn't she ever think her son might get SRAD?

I really like it, the guard is to help from cutting yourself.

TBH If it were mine I'd just shave without the guard, its like a western Kamisori :)

That's an attachment for cutting hair. Interesting that it comes off like that and can be used for shaving. Our barbers have the ones designated for cutting hair, cool to see an old hybrid. Great little find.

Yep. I have one of those. A few others do too. Not my favorite razor, but remove the guard and it works fine for shaving. I remember when one of the custom razor guys made a handled razor instead of scaled (Purist I think it was called?) and a few guys were commenting about how he should patent it or this and that. I posted a pic of "The Real" and said he might be a bit late to get that patent. (Pat Feb 10 1903)

There is one now on ebay (overpriced IMO), and it includes the instruction sheet, clearly indicating the razor is meant for shaving.

mine works great, it was made by George Korn. it will always have a place in my rotation. i re-scaled mine in Cocobolo, if u call it a re-scale. i made the handle a little larger.

I am glad you bought it! I would love to have a vintage western kamisori! Looks like something ladykate would whip up in his lab.
