The RAD Never Leaves - New Acquire Slim

Hey Everyone,

It's been a while since I've posted. A couple of months ago my Grandfather said he had a box for me the next time I came home. Knowing I was into wet shaving, he had put together a few of his old items that he wasn't using.

Aside from a LOT of Old Spice soap, he gave me an old brush (appears to be boar) and an old cup my Dad got him for Christmas one year with "Packard" on it. We are car guys, and he restored two Packards. If my Dad ever asks about the cup I'll give it to him, but for now, I am not telling him about it.

Aside from that he gave me an old straight razor that belonged to another family member (not sure who) and the piece de resistance, a 1960's Slim! I couldn't be more excited. It had a fair amount of scum and a bit of green corrosion. Unfortunately some plate loss was inevitable and it's a bit broken. The twist mechanism works great but the doors are floppy. Which means I can push/pull the twist mechanism up and down. The adjustment seems to work fine otherwise, and I could probably use it as a daily shaver, but I decided I really wanted to get it restored (since it was my Grandfather's and it means a lot that it was.).

SWMBO agreed that the restoration was a great idea and we will be shipping it off to Razor Emporium in April for a "REVAMP". Does anyone have any opinion on their work?

I don't think you will get very many good recommendations for RE around here. They are a banned vendor last I heard.

I've not had any dealings with them. Alex or Porter, one of the other mods will see this shortly, they can give you more information.

I did a search, and saw some of the horror stories. It would mean a lot to me to have my Grandfather's razor restored, because at this point I see a lot of pits/plate loss that looks like it could make it unusable. I'd like to be able to shave for sometime, and it looks like the revamp actually fixes some of the mechanical defects, which I also have. I don't want to count my Grandfather's razor as a loss and something nice to look at. I don't however see any other services out there.

Anytime. I would kill to have my grandfather's or my father's razors. I would hate to see your's destroyed. Let me know how it turns out.

I should have mentioned that last night, but got side tracked on the replate issue. I've fixed several TTO razors with this or some variation thereof. BTW, another member here that does replates & repairs is Onotoman. You can PM him, he'll help you out.

Congrats on getting your granddad's razor. I expect to see this thing after the restoration is complete. :biggrin1: And whats up with not posting any pictures of the Packard mug or the straight?

The slim is IMO, one of the finest vintage razors out there.

It's so cool that your Grandfather passed on this shave legacy to you. (The Old Spice soap is nothing to sneeze at either).

Best of Luck and enjoy your new razor!
