What's new

The "new" Old Spice

Someone gave me a bottle of Old Spice for Christmas, and I splashed it on for the first time today (by request of SWMBO, no less!). I guess the last time I wore Old Spice was in the Shulton days, because this new stuff smells nothing like what I remember. SWMBO actually liked it, but I'm not a fan. I've heard that the Family Dollar stuff made by Vi-Jon is pretty faithful to the Shulton formula. I might pick up a bottle of that, and then start hitting up thrift and antique shops to see if I can find some of the genuine article.

Fam Dollar OS is pretty good and the price is even better. 2 bucks for a seven ounce bottle. The oldest Old Spice I have been able to locate is from the early 1970's according to the bottle design and markings. Fortunately, the bottles still contained product, some near full. I have also mixed the new OS AS and new EdC half and half to get a stronger, longer lasting scent.

The VJ OS isn't too bad - much closer to the scent of the original than the new stuff. I keep a couple of the 'new' bottles around and put the VJ in them, because I really don't like the VJ bottles.

Likewise I'm not a fan of the "new" Old Spice. I bought a bottle of the Classic scent a few weeks ago and it has too much of a floral/synthetic scent to my nose...whatever it is I don't like the way it smells on me. I have a bottle of Old Spice "Original" from 1997 which looks to be Canadian (everything is written in English and French), that smells much better. Also picked up a bottle of VJ from Family Dollar that I really like. They both smell spicier, and remind me a lot more of the stuff my Dad had back in the 80's.

I have acquired about 9 or 10 vintage bottles. I have only come across one that had any Shulton goodness in it. To my nose, it is different from current P&G OS, but not by much. The ViJon Stuff smells great, however the scent doesn't last very long. My solution is to mix the P&G stuff with the ViJon stuff. That way you kind of get the best of both worlds. It smells more like the original and it lasts longer than just a few minutes. And it also makes a pretty cheap blend.

I have a few bottles of "New" Old Spice put away in a cool dark place. I am going to see if the scent "matures" with time to smell like the vintage bottles of OS we find now.
I will report back in 2026. ; )

After reading this thread, I just opened the Canadian P&G After Shave I bought last week. If says on the box: If your Grandfather hadn't worn it, you wouldn't exist!, lol. It is not the Classic Old Spice it purports to be, close, but too much floral, not enough spice and a chemical after tone. This is my first Old Spice purchase since the Shulton days and this is NOT Old Spice as I remember it.

Not gonna lie, the line of "If your Grandfather hadn't worn it, you wouldn't exist!" got me to buy this. Granted, I'm probably a bit short in the tooth/long in the drool (27), but I love this stuff and has become my go-to winter AS.

I kept the New Old Spice on my hands all night while watching TV and smelled it repeatedly. I would probably like it if it was not intended to be Old Spice of "Old". I apprenticed in an old pharmacy from 1966 to 1972 and we had a large selection of shaving supplies. I bought an Aristocrat there in 1967. I wish I had bought a case or two of Old Spice and stashed it away.

I recently purchased an old OS ship decanter which was empty, I have poured a bottle of the new stuff into it to see if being in glass rather than plastic will make any difference. I'm just gonna leave it for a couple years.

I love the current version of Old Spice - the aftershave and the cologne. Great scent for a small amount of $$.

Since I got into wet shaving I started looking at aftershaves and checked out old spice at the store the other day. I have to say I was disappointed that it smells nothing like I remember. Where's the spice?

Because of my age, I didn't start using Old Spice until after P&G had already purchased it. So I've never smelled the original, but I am pretty happy with the current. Although I think it could last a little longer!
