The Merkur Futur

After my debacle with my Gillette New OC I decided to use the Futur I had gotten the same day. My god is it a great shave. I was able to pick it up on the bay for $60 shipped and it's probably the best shave I've had, even more so than my slim adjustable. It's a bit heavy as hell, but it's phenomenal! Even when I do touch up sans cream it doesn't irritate at all when set to 2.5/3.

I am curious though. Is this one of the heaviest razors out there? It sometimes feels like I'm shaving with a dumbell, and it's lighter than my DE89 and various other gillettes.

If I remember correct, the Futur weighs around four ounces which is on the heavier end of razors.

I meant to say heavier lol. I think it weighs as much as my 89L and slim adj together lol

I just got a Futur this week and I wholeheartedly agree... It is fantastic! I love the weight. I imagine the heft is making a difference versus razors with less mass. Since I'm new to the Futur as well, I'd be curious to know what settings people generally use and what blades...

I keep mine set at 1 or 2 or between there somewhere.

All blades I've stuck in it work just fine for me.

I have its cousin, the Vision which gives me the best DE shaves yet, although I get good shaves from many DEs. I have to take down and dry my Vision after every shave to ward off corrosion, but the shave is worth the maintenance. I have had no corrosion recurrance in two years with the daily take down.

I really like polsilvers in mine. I haven't found a razor they disagree with yet either!

I like the Futur and usually shave with a 4 and a half. Really get a nice shave and don't find it too aggressive. Most aggressive de shaver I have is the 2013 r41

I do, sometimes (often, I must admit) I crank it all the way open just to mix things up.

The thing is, the Futur was my first razor after getting back into DE. About a week in, I nicked myself pretty good at setting #2. I took a day off from shaving and the following day I cranked it past 6 (thinking 1 was aggressive and 6 mild, which had to be the case if I nicked myself on 2!). I took my time and was very careful. The result was my first BBS shave. Only later did I realize I had the numbering backassward.

I've never gone past 4. Maybe some day. I am surprised that it weighs more than a Vision though. My Ikon might be heavier but I really enjoy my Futur.

Great to see all the positive comments here - pretty sure there's one on its way in my direction for birthday & all I've seen recently are negatives.
