The Essence of Cold (or, Have You Ever Wanted to Become Iceman) - Frostbite Review

In my efforts to control the growth and spread of Shaving Gear Acquisition Disease (SGAD), I've been thankfully lucky (so far): I still have only 1 Razor, 1 Brush, and 1 Shaving Cream I've been using. However, I've spotted signs of this dangerous affliction growing in the area of After Shaves.

It started innocently enough: I had Musgo Real Balm (for sensitive skin and in case I was burning from a bad shave day). Then thanks to all the great word-of-mouth, I tried out Krampert's Finest Bay Rum for a gentle splash-style After Shave. Only two. Phew! Then Captain's Choice, and RazoRock King Louis AS, both excellent. "OK, that's it!"

Ah, but, no. After being so impressed with Krampert's Finest Bay Rum Acadian Spice (reviewed > here <), and hearing that they were releasing a new After Shave that was completely different, yet still gentle on the skin, I had to try it. I couldn't resist. :biggrin1:

A few days ago, my package of Krampert's Finest Frostbite After Shave (Combo Pack with Stainless Steel Flask) arrived (from Italian Barber). I eagerly ripped open the package and couldn't wait to shave the next day to try it. :wink2:

So after an outstanding shave, I vigorously shook the bottle of Frostbite (as recommended), and then applied it to my face. As I was applying it, the first thing that hit me was the scent:

* A deep Frankincense mixed with Menthol and a touch of Mint. Lovely.

I was expecting to be frozen by all the early reports by various people, but instead it felt gentle and there was almost no alcohol burn whatsoever! Even less than Krampert's Finest Bay Rum (which is already practically non-existent). I then continued to happily splash the Frostbite across the rest of my face and then...

PHWOOM! My face started to feel like I was being transported to the Arctic or Siberia. :001_smile And then it got colder, and colder, and colder, until I started to wonder, "So is this what it feels like to be Iceman?" :thumbup1:

Frostbite has a fantastic, super cool, icy sensation! It's pretty awesome. The cooling levels off, and after about 30 minutes or so, it gently fades away.

The Menthol and Frankincense and Mint scent also fades away about 30 - 45 minutes after, which is fine. And best of all, as with Krampert's Finest Bay Rum, the new Frostbite rates a fantastic "1" on the EWG Database:

Overall, from the all-natural ingredients, gentle skin feel (and the way it leaves my face feeling afterwards), to the blast of minty Arctic Cold, Krampert's Finest Frostbite After Shave (handcrafted in small batches in Maine, U.S.A.) is a welcome addition to the world of After Shaves. :001_smileEspecially as the Summer months hit, this is something I'll be reaching for to keep cool after every shave.

VERY nice review. Makes me want to get some (even though I am not a big menthol aftershave person)

Sounds like some good stuff that I need to try out.

The only thing I'm missing in my FFF shaves. Is the splash of an iced cold aftershave.

Thanks for the posting the pic's of it.

I must have this. . . . . . . . . . .

Louisiana heat/humidity is killing me already. And Italian Barber is sold out.

I am building up a cart/wish list at Italian Barber in anticipation of their new stuff this weekend - I wish they had this AS in stock.

To the OP, thanks for taking the time to review

@ turtle -
Thanks turtle! :001_smile Yah I'm not normally into menthol by itself, but this one was surprising and had natural essential oils that added a more outdoors, winter smell to it.

@ ksblazer -
Thanks! BTW, what is an "FFF shave"?

Hi Mythrol, Atalk,

Thanks! I feel your pain! That's exactly why I bought Frostbite. :biggrin1:

It's heating up for Summer already, and the cooling effect of Frostbite is pretty awesome. I feel so refreshed after.

Hopefully Italian Barber restocks soon and you can order some. Let us know what you think of it when you get it.

This stuff is great and very, very cooling. I can often still feel the menthol tingling between my fingers even a few minutes after splashing it on.

Nobody has asked this yet, and I'm dying to know the answer. How does it compare to "THE RUB"?

Hi Josh,

Yes! I agree.

One of the best things about Krampert's Finest Frostbite is that as you apply, if some if it spills across the back of your hand, down your forearm a bit, your hand and arm start to feel the Icy Cool Freezing effect! It's awesome.

Just to let yoy guys know Italian Barber is back in stock. I put my order in for the bay rum as well.

I almost got the flask but for the same price you can try both of Mr. Krampert's products and I was so impressed with his process of basically making the best aftershave he can without worrying about a price point that I really wanted to try both.

Have you folks tried freezing your bottle of AS?
If it contains any alcohol, no worry of freezing.
And it adds quite a jolt to the after shave clean up!!

Osage Rub

@ ksblazer: Ah OK. I have never tried that before, but I'm curious. :biggrin1:

Hi Mythrol,

Oh nice! Thanks for the 411, my buddy was looking for this as well; I'll tell him that Italian Barber got it back.

And I think you'll really like Krampert's Finest Bay Rum as well (I like it more than Frostbite), but I like Frostbite a lot right now because of the hot Summer. :001_tongu

How would you compare Krampert's Bay Rum to VIBR? One of the reasons I was interested in it was because my wife likes VIBR but says she gets a bit of an "artificial" smell from, which means sense from a $4 bottle of aftershave. My hope is that Krampert's will be all that lovely By Rum scent minus the cheap fillers / chemicals that put my wife off of VIBR just a bit.
