A 25 dollar pipe in 1945 is $406 in today's money.

I don't think I've ever paid that much ($400+) for any pipe. I guess I'd be at most a $5 or $10 pipe owner back then.

But if we thought a $25 pipe was expensive in 1945, we haven't seen anything yet.

Soon enough, we'll read about one of the high end pipe makers of that era.

... smoke a pipe.

Besides being a beautiful and stylish piece of advertising in its own right, this one might evoke images of the the long distant past for some of us … perhaps a hazy reminiscence of someone’s parents or grandparents, now very old or gone, first courting back in the day … full of youth and beauty, and promise for the future. It’s a snapshot of one of the stages of life, something we sometimes forget that we all share. Old Grandpa or Pop-pop Codger was once a vibrant and dashing young man in his prime, too.

And dressed like grownups instead of like Bart Simpson.

Plus I see they refer to the long yellow wool thing by its proper name, "muffler," instead of "scarf." Scarves are those silky things women wear as fashion accessories. Men wear mufflers.

A suit and tie to a sporting event is long past. Today, the folks you see there are barely able to put on a t shirt and sweat pants.

Here's another four-pipe camaraderie scene, with cards. And at least two stogies so that reasonable minds may differ.

Another Codger Cabin to be sure.
