The Best Donuts in the World

My first job after high school was at my hometown newspaper. Part of what I did was drive the truck that delivered all the papers from the morning press run. I dropped off bundles of papers to all the paperboys in town and to stores that sold newspapers and magazines. I also had to fill up all the vending machines in town before I finished my run. I usually got finished and back to the plant right around dawn. When I started, the guys in the pressroom took me aside and told me that three papers had to be left at the best donut shop in town. In return, the owner of the shop put together a box of fresh donuts for the guys. They didn't care how the rest of my run went, but under no circumstances was I to miss the paper/donut exchange. And I gotta tell you, those were the best donuts that I've ever had. About thirty years have gone by and that donut shop has moved to a couple of different locations. I was home last month and my brother and I tracked it down to their new location, a small factory that they're running out in the country. He was there when they opened up at 5:00 AM and bought a box for everybody to share for breakfast. They were still the best donuts I've ever had.

Until today. I was taking my daughter to Target to get a couple of things and we noticed a new donut shop in a strip mall nearby. My daughter ran in to check it out while I was finishing up a phone call in the car. In about three minutes, she came sprinting back to the car with a box of hot, fresh donuts. All I can say is that I never ate anything like the Maple Bacon Bar in my life. It was a soft ladyfinger, filled with cream and iced with maple icing. On top of that, a perfectly crisp strip of bacon. Check them out in this photo:

The owners spent a year or so traveling around the country and tasting the best donuts across the US. When they found something they liked, they stayed on and apprenticed there for a while to learn the tricks of the trade. Then they moved on to their next destination. Last month, they opened their shop in Durham, NC. And they have biscuits too!

What's your favorite donut place?

The best I have ever had was a donut shop in Lakeside, OH (a resort on Lake Erie). I loved their cake donuts, and always made sure to show up when they finished a fresh batch.

The Fractured Prune in Ocean City, MD. During the summer months, the line goes out the door. The French toast donuts are my favorite.

Back Door Donuts, Oak Bluffs, Martha's Vineyard, MA.

At 7:30 PM in the rear of Martha's Vineyard Gourmet Bakery, well after the shop is closed, the back door opens and they begin selling donuts, hence the name.

You line up in the dark parking lot and order. Apple fritters, cinnamon rolls, an assortment of donuts.

The apple fritters are awesome, the cinnamon rolls will weaken the knees.

But, for me and several other people I've gone with, the real super star is the traditional glazed donut.

Everything is literally right from the fryer/oven. Like you see them remove the item from the cooking device, drop it in a bag and hand it to you. Super fresh and super tasty.

For everyone we've brought, it was a game changer. Just about everybody who's gone with us thought they had a favorite donut spot. Each one left with a new favorite.

If you ever find yourself in Chicago, you can visit a place called "Glazed & Infused" that makes a maple bacon long john that is pretty darn spectacular:

All the donuts I've tried from them are excellent.

Doughnut Bank in Evansville, In. They have amazing blueberry cake doughnuts. When I am traveling I have been known to take a one to two hour detour so that I can go though Evansville to get these doughnuts.

Judging by the responses in this thread and my own personal experience, the best donuts come from independent donut shops.

You guys are killing me. After some stomach issues I was diagnosed with Celiac disease and have to avoid wheat flour. So donuts are a no no. But I sure miss them (and good sub sandwich bread...and good pizza...and beer...and....)! Happy New Year to all!

On our yearly trips to Louisville we always hit the Krispy Kreme on Bardstown Road. I can't remember how many years we've been going to that one. I always liked KK dounts. As for NJ, I'd rather have a nice lemon or cheese pastry from the bakery than a donut. I don't know of any good donut shops around me. You certainly can't get an edible donut or drinkable coffee at Dunkin Donuts anymore.

Federal Donuts in Philadelphia. They also have great fried chicken but get there early as they sell out quickly.

When I'm in western MA I like the Donut Dip in West Springfield.

Bacon on a donut, sounds like my kind of place. The donut place in my town is ordinary, except for one of the employees. She is a gorgeous Mexican lady, with a bright smile and a humble demeanour. We are a small town, no one knows her name, but everyone knows who you are talking about when you reference "The donut girl". My wife even likes her... in a customer/retailer kind of way, I think.

Top Pot in Seattle are some of the best I've ever had. But here in Western New York I eagerly await autumn as the only time each year I eat donuts anymore are during my visit to Pumpkinville farms in Great Valley. They make fresh pumpkin donuts with cinnamon sugar that are worth the years wait.

I have a huge weakness for Hispanic women.
