Yeah, I've noticed that by-and-large, its a bunch of nitwits on ebay who don't care too much about quality razors but about collectibility, prettiness, variations of the word 'mint' and NOSiness (TM) - there are many quality razors out there if you are willing to put in a little elbow grease.

I got a dbl duck a couple of years ago that slipped past everybody because of the spelling and bad photos. It was a spanking new goldedge for $51. It is still a beauty.

Yeah. I was looking at a Fil 14 that ended ~$55, but it had a lot of honewear (and it was bad honing too, a lot of pressure at the heel and toe), so I passed. Another one went for like $30, but it has some fairly deep pitting, so with the work that would have been required to get it back to being pretty, it wasn't worth it to me. But this duck looks like maybe an hour of sanding and I'll be ready to put it on a stone. It'd be nice if it was NOS, but can't be too picky. I'm happy. Gives me something to do.

Great score! Great feeling when you know that something is a great buy, even though it doesn't look a million bucks. I can see a whole load of very ordinary blades that are just well-photographed/shiny-looking, that are bid well above straights from good houses.

Celebrated too soon. Razor arrived, and it's covered with that microscopic pitting that looks like something too close to an airbrush artists desk. Too small to show up on all but the best photo's. I sanded maybe 4 hours by hand, took out a couple big spots with a dremel, and there's probably 200-400 spots still there. Can't sand anymore without risking turning the blade into tin foil. I'm about ready to peen and hone it. It's a little depressing every time I look close at the blade. I don't know if the pitting will ever eat through it or not.


I should be able to get the razor into a shaver, but it'll come to about 8 hrs work by the time I'm done, and it won't be a display piece for sure. Still, hopefully it will shave well.

It's funny. The tang has almost no pitting, and none of this tiny stuff. The last guy to use this must have just never dried the blade after use, I suppose.

The scales are in good shape other than a bunch of old hair and gunk between them . I'm actually considering putting the blade in an alternate set of scales so I have a replacement set of Ducks then next time I see a good condition blade with warped to hell scales.

Razor came out nice and sharp and looks pretty decent if you don't get too close.
