Thater Brush Instructions

I just got my first Thater 2-band. I can hear ol' man Simpson rolling in his grave. Anyhow, when I read the info that came with the brush it actually advises against face-lathering!! According to Herr Thater der face wears out the soft tips of der brush. As he states, think how much harder whiskers are than 2-band silvertip hair. He also says that lathering was traditionally done in a bowl. He gave me pause for thought-but I'm not gonna start bowl lathering just because of this, would you? Where's the sensual experience going to come from if you don't have those soft sturdy hairs caressing your kisser?

Should I get my money back, or is old man Thater just a worry-wart. What say you?

Life is short ... enjoy face lathering regardless of what the worry-wart says!

One could argue for example that in order to truly extend the life of a precious brush, one should not use it at all ... and just keep it cased in a vacuum sealed enclosure ...

Not only do I face lather with my Thater 2-band, I let it dry sitting on its base, another no-no. What's the worse that can happen? A new brush? If it's that temperamental, I won't buy a Thater next time. I do follow Thater's advice about hot water, but I did that with all my other brushes anyway. I clean my Thater more frequently, but only because it seems to gunk-up quicker than my Best and Silvertip brushes and I found that just lathering brushes on my glycerin face soap was faster and easier than my normal cleaning method and just as good.

ol' man Simpson advises that you only use paint brush strokes with his brushes, so both manufacturers have their own version of the CYA clause.

It is my opinion the any decently constructed brush that isn't abused will last for decades. (Face lathering will only be abusive if you mash and grind the hell out of your brush - same goes for bowl lathering and soap loading).

EDIT: MEN don't read instructions :tongue_sm

Just FYI, I did not get it from Thater directly but from straightrazordesign.com

That's where I got mine from, being fully aware of the other threads, and anticipating the lack of thater support. It seems like a well-made brush, but I'll use it like I want and enjoy it while it lasts. I never expect anything to last forever so I'm not concerned.

I face lather with both of my Thater 2 bands, and they still feel like a soft pillow caressing my face. One of the finest shaving brushes made IMO.

I cannot agree more. Plus, with my chronic SBAD, I'll just have to buy another.

The last time I checked, bowls were harder than whiskers. At least when face lathering, you're less likely to use a brush in an aggressive manner since doing so would rough up your face. Face lather away mein freund. Your brush doesn't care if it's getting worked on your face or a bowl, so long as it gets its diet of soap and cream.

Ignore the instructions... Don't mash it or boil it and you will be fine... I have 7 Thäters and only face lather...

Lather away any way you desire. If a brush, and I mean any brush can't stand up to face lathering personally I would throw it right in the trash can....

I think they are right about borax, although many use this chemical for cleaning.According to Thater, just about anything you do with the brush voids the warranty !

Use a live badger. Wash it with ivory dish soap every once in a while. Feed it Purina Badger Food in pellet form, or the warranty is voided. If you want Super Silvertip, you can use Palmolive on the neck hair. Anything else, and the warranty is voided.
They have plenty of backbone, they're vertebrates. If your badger has insufficient backbone, the warranty is voided.

So, according to the pamphlet, Thaters only last 5 to 10 years. Hmmmm, I believe I read somewhere that Marco said his grandfather used the same brush for 60+ years. It must not have been a Thater.
