What's new

TGN recommendations

So I just got a new handle from a member here and am looking to put a TGN knot in it. Its around a 22m. As background, I usually use soaps or shave sticks that have been grated into a mug. Occasionally I use a cream, but I think I need something with a touch of scritch to it since I use harder soaps more often.

Which TGN knot, that you have used as above, would you recommend?

I agree. I recently put a 22mm 2 band finest into an EverReady handle that measures about 22.8mm. I have not yet permanently attached it, but I expect that I will settle on a 48mm loft. It is probably my favourite brush for hard soaps.

EDIT:

I just set the knot at 48mm

Finest for sure if you want a touch of scritch. I use a finest and a Grade A. They both work great for soaps and creams but the Grade A is very soft

Agree with everyone. 2 band Finest. In the brushes I have made with this knot, a loft between 47mm and 50mm seems to be optimal for this knot.

So, because I am new at this, when you say a 47 - 50 loft is that the height of the bristles above the top of the brush? So the loft is dependent on how deep you set the brush?

Correct. Many handles are made with a 15mm pocket, and many knots are 65 or 67mm. If you want a loft of 47mm you would have to drill the handle deeper. If the pocket is too deep you can shim it up with coins.

I have only bought one TGN knot and im waiting for it to arrive and its the finest :) Heard good things about them :D

Finest is great. I have also reknotted with a short lofted best from TGN and found it to be just as soft at the tips with plenty of backbone. The best may have a touch of scritch to it that the finest doesn't. I like the 2 banded look of the finest better.

I also have made myself a brush with a TGN Finest bulb 22 mm nominal knot, 23 mm measured, and 50 mm loft. It's a beautiful brush.

So does setting the loft lower make the brush stiffer? Seems it would condense the hair a bit and make a denser, stiffer brush.

Excellent information here. I'm looking to restore a few brushes for the first time and was wondering the same thing.

Stiffer with PERCEIVED density as the only real way you can increase density is to add more hair/bristle but you get the gist.

Actually IMHO, playing with the diameter of the hole in the handle makes a bigger difference for the perception of stiffness and density than changing the loft 1-2 mm. A 22 mm TGN knot has about a 21 mm cup. So, changing the handle orifice between 23 and 24 mm will fine tune the overall properties of the knot more than changing the loft between 48 and 50 mm for example.
