Taming my cell phone

For the past several months I have taken to flipping the switch so I don't hear it ring nor hear the text or email notifications. At my convenience during the day (red lights, break) I check it and respond. Life is better and less harried now believe me.

Highly recommended!

If I hit lotto, I'll toss my cell phone into the South Pacific while taking a slow boat, to my new hut, on the beach in Tahiti.
Once my new hut is set up, people can email me. (can't get rid of the computer!)

I send/receive roughly 2,000-3,000 texts every month. I get more gratification from hearing it ring and completely ignoring it.

I get hundreds of emails a day. The first time I turned off the email notification sound was one of the greatest days of my life.

I've long since turned off pretty much every notification on my phone. I even have my work email through the Gmail app, not the native mail app on the iphone. Its set to not ring, blink, bing, banner or anything when I receive a work email. My smart phone is a very valuable part of my life, but I don't let notifications rule it.

We also have set a no electronics at the dinner table rule. All cell phones, tablets, laptops etc must go on silent and in a separate room when we sit down to dinner.

That is the first thing I do with every phone I get. I also set it to "manual" as far as checking email goes.

The only notifications I have set to actually make a noise is phone calls and texts. Everything else is silent.
