Tactical lights for pistol.

Looking at getting a tactical light(maybe laser combo) for my nightstand gun. Don't want to spend lots of money(max around $150). I'm currently looking at the Streamlight models TLR 1(around $100), TL3 (compact and around $70) and the TL4 (Compact light/laser combo $112). Anyone have any experience with Streamlight Tac lights? Any other suggestions?

They're about as good as they get. Good customer service too.

Stay away from the cheap Chinese stuff and you'll be good to go.

There's Surefire, and then there's the wannabes. If your life is on the line, get a X300U.

If you're cheap, anything else will work.....once.

This is about the most inaccurate statement i've read on this site. Plenty of good quality lights at reasonable prices. Surefire lights are good but their technology is no different than anyone else.

When it comes to weaponmounted lights, the statement is accurate.

When it comes to handhelds, it's still mostly true.

Some Streamlights work well. Some don't. Most Fenixes do well, for a while.

The TLR series pistol lights don't hold up to hard use, neither do the M3's. Experience shows this.

I'm not saying that surefire doesn't make a fine product, but to say that everything else is crap, is a ridiculous statement. I would love to see some concrete scientific testing, that proves surefire is far and away better.

Here's an example of an equally ridiculous statement:

There's simpson, and there's the wannabes. If your shaving comfort is on the line, go with a chubby.
If you're cheap, anything else will work, once.

Look, I'm not trying to argue with you and I respect the fact that you're a veteran. I Thank You for your service and don't want to get into a back and forth with you. I just think the there are other brands that are equal in performance for less money. From the limited research i've done, it appears surefire uses seoul semiconductors and Cree led's, Just like most other high end lights.

I think a Streamlight is fine for nightstand use and limited range duty. If on a high round count firing schedule, a used Surefire is better. If you can wait, the Inforce pistol WML is due out soon and if it's anything like the rifle version, it will be nice piece of kit.

It might worth checking the Equipment Exchange on AR15.com and your local gunboards for used Streamlights or Surefires.

I've got a lot of rounds through my 5.56 AR using an older Streamlight TLR1 and it's never failed me.

I have the same HL impact sport muffs, I really like them. Do you use plugs in conjunction, or just the muffs?

If I'm shooting a lot of rifle (like in the above carbine class), I use the Surefires in conjunction with the truly excellent HLs. I've also been known to plug my phone into the HLs when at the range for some tunes :D

I used to plug my phone in as well. I didn't like the quality of the speaker in the HL's, unless it was talk radio or sports, so I now use the skullcandy in ear buds with the noise canceling rubber ear inserts ( I just use the $10 ones from Target ). They work really well for me. They fit good in my ear, as well as the muffs, and I get some db reduction even when the buds are off. ( no music )

As I have had both products, I can tell you that the Surefire switch feels much more sturdy and secure. That being said, both the Surefire and the Streamlight have been to many classes, mounted on both pistol and rifle. After roughly 10k rounds through each of them, they both still work fine.

I would still trust the Surefire more. Even after the barrage of rounds, the Surefire felt more like it was new out of the box. Plenty of scratches to be had, but the switch was as tight as ever. Streamlight felt like it was looser.

If this is a nightstand gun, get the Streamlight and take that exra $100-150 and either put it towards more ammo or towards a class. If you are going to be using it in some heavy duty usage, say service weapon, opt for the Surefire.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I own a surefire flashlight and I know they make great stuff...but I just need a tac light for a bedside table gun(Glock 35), so I think Im going to go with the Streamlight. Just have to decide if I want the TRL-1, 3, 4.

I did look at that one. Thanks, I am also considering that one. Not nearly as many reviews of them...so still doing my research.

The guy that did the review I linked to earlier has a military record/skillset that is shared by few other human beings. I've shot with him at a class.
