Tabac was the first soap I bought, and I love it. I'd like to buy a second soap, just to see if anything remotely as good as tabac. Also, the uniqueness of the smell is sadly starting to disappear - kinda like with deodorant or cologne.

My question is, are there any other soaps that can come close? I recall reading a thread where an English soap was spoken of highly... I cannot remember the name - I want to say it was something like Peter's English Shrubbery - but people were saying it too had a very unique smell.

So what should I get guys? (Or should I just realize that I picked a winner right outta the gate?)

MWF Michael Wool Fat strange name but one of my Favs along with Tabac and a couple of others. I think it would be a great 2nd soap. Check out the reviews

You picked a winner right out of the gate.

You didn't mean Mitchell's Wool Fat, did you? I don't know if I'd call the scent unique, but it is pleasant. I'm a fan, but it really has problems with hard water. (I know, not everyone seems to have had problems...)

I'm getting ready to try Cella and Mama Bear, myself

No, no, Peter's English Shrubbery is right. Just dang if I can't find a US supplier who carries it. Being a big fan of Tabac I was disappointed with Mitchell's Wool Fat. The lather was nowhere near as easy as Tabac and the bland dish soap scent was, well, BLAH.

If you want the magic of Tabac with a distinctly different pungent scent then I would track down an Irisch Moos shave stick. It is made by the same company as Tabac but with a very green scent. It isn't bad but I don't know if I am used to it like I am to Tabac. It only comes in a shave stick but it is easy to mill down into a bowl.

Other than that, many folks claim DR Harris soaps are very close, if not better than, Tabac in performance.

Try Arko. Super cheap, tallow, and has a very unique smell. Personally I love it and if you like Tabac I think you would like Arko. Fantastic lather also.

Whether the soaps are as great as Tabac depends on your personal preferences, and it can take some experimenting with other products to find out just exactly what they are. That said, I've found the 'French' soaps with shea butter---Pré de Provence, Provence Santé---a very good compliment to Tabac. Institut du Karité is probably also in this list, but I haven't tried that to date.

Arko is great, but it smells sort like something you would get from mixing cinnamon sticks and urinal pucks together. Thankfully, it's a bit more subdued once you work it into a lather. Seriously, get it a try. It's so cheap that your out practically nothing if you don't like it. So just try it. :wink2:

Cella or any other Italian soft soap is also worth trying. Most are scented to smell of bitter almonds (think more marzipan, less cherry). I have only tried Cella, and it produces an excellent lather, but you could also try P.160 or Valobra.

You could go to Prarie Creations and pick up a puck of Krissy's wonderful tallow soap; she offers TONS of different scents. Price is right, too.
