Tabac Original Review

Continuing my shave soap and cream reviews;

This is my review of Tabac Original Shave Soap. Products used during the shower and shave were as follows;
  1. Pears Soap with Mint Extract Bath Soap
  2. Dollar Shave Club Face Wash
  3. The Body Shop Tea Tree Face Scrub
  4. Derby Lemon Shaving Cream
  5. Q-Shave scuttle
  6. Stirling Soap Finest Badger Shave Brush
  7. Rockwell 6S on R6
  8. Feather (4th use)
  9. Gentleman Jon’s Alum Block
  10. Nivea Deep Comfort Aftershave
  11. Old Spice Endurance Deodorant
  12. Mamara Barber No. 2 EdC/Aftershave (Used as cologne)
The following process is what I used for my SOTD with the Tabac Original Shave Soap. This is also the same process I use with all my shave creams;
  1. While I brushed my teeth I made sure the scuttle ran under the hot water
  2. I filled the water hollow and the lathering bowl portion of scuttle with hot water
  3. Rinsed brush with hot water
  4. Placed brush in scuttle
  5. Drizzled hot water over Tabac Original Shave Soap for blooming
  6. Took shower
  7. Used Bloom water from puck/bowl as pre-shave
  8. Dumped scuttle water from both water hollow and lathering bowl area
  9. Refilled water hollow with fresh hot water
  10. Took out brush and rung out excess water
  11. Loaded damp brush from puck creating a cream
  12. Started working the cream in the bowl
  13. Added hot water via finger tips until desired lather is produced
  14. Lather my face
  15. Cleaned my glasses with finger tip of lather
  16. Waited another minute to let the lather work its magic
  17. Pass 1 WTG
  18. Lather face
  19. Pass II Lower Jaw to Nose
  20. Lather face
  21. Pass III Chin to Ear
  22. Check for pick ups (None Needed)
  23. Scrub face with some of the leftover lather
  24. Lather left armpit
  25. Shave left armpit
  26. Lather right armpit
  27. Shave right armpit
  28. Rinse both armpits
  29. Rinse face
  30. Apply alum to Face
  31. Rinse Alum Block
  32. Apply Alum to Armpits
  33. Rinse Alum Block
  34. Clean equipment
  35. Rinse off Alum from face
  36. Rinse off Alum from armpits
  37. Dry off
  38. Apply Aftershave
  39. Apply Deodorant
  40. Apply Aftershave/Cologne
Now for my thoughts. Just a heads up. Due to my process of bowl lathering unless the soap/cream is just horrible I always get a great lather. It takes longer, but the control of how much water is used really helps dial in the lather just right. Some soaps/creams take longer than others. So it is hard for me to find a soap/cream I dislike.
  1. Time to Lather
    1. Extremely quick
      1. Be careful it doesn’t fool you it might look like nice lather, but may need more water
  2. Quality of Lather
    1. Great quality
      1. Needs more water than you would think it would
  3. Cushion
    1. Great Cushion
  4. Slickness
    1. Whilst lathered
      1. Extremely nice
    2. After Pass (Bare Wet Skin)
      1. Not bad at all
        1. Great slickness once the area is moistened again
        2. If pick ups were needed just some water will suffice
  5. Scent
    1. I personally love it
    2. Just an old world smell
    3. Wish I had the Aftershave, EdC/T, and deodorant to go with my puck
  6. Rinse
    1. Rinsed clean easily
  7. Post Shave
    1. Fantastic
      1. Does not suck moisture from the skin
As far as the scent, it seems you either love it or you hate it. Obviously I love it. The performance of the soap, as others before me have pointed out, is the standard all other shave soaps are judged by.

I will be buying many more pucks of this soap for storage purposes. I have seen pictures of other members storing these in a freezer. I am not sure I will go that far.

I’m very impressed with this soap.

That’s a lot of steps for a shave.
Not really. It's what most people do, but just don't think about it in all its steps. Ever did that exercise in Middle School where you had to write a step by step on how to exactly make a Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich? If you really think about it, there are a lot of steps to that. Just most of them we don't think about due to just doing it. I could put down, "3 Pass" shave. However, that leaves a lot of interpretation.

The important part of the review is on the bottom one third. The steps are to let the reader know how it was done. This way if someone else has a different outcome they can review the process I have and see what was different.

I do thank you for reading the review by the way.

Great review of a top performing soap (at least IMHO)!

I too really like Tabac, both face lathering and in a scuttle. For Christmas I ordered Wholly Kaw King of Oud. WOW, it is even slightly better than Tabac. Scent is very good, although different from Tabac. I really like the scent of Tabac, and realize that WK is about 2x the cost per shave.... but the lather of WK is truly amazing and a game changer. Its not going to replace Tabac in my den, but is right next to it.

After shave is great - May as well get the large bottle and don’t forget the cologne! Love that manly scent.

Tabac is my fav soap. Amazing clouds of pillowy slick foam. Not super crazy about the scent but can live with it.

Tabac is just an incredible product. Always top notch performance for me with minimal effort. With other soaps you'll hear about having to perform all these steps, use specific water, etc. Not with tabac. This stuff just works and I've even grown to enjoy the scent.

Nice review. I liked the detailed steps - when I first started using a brush, scuttle, double edge, etc. I didn't know what the heck to do. Posts like this will also help newer members.

And yes, Tabac...ah...I was very unsure of it when I first caught it's scent. It reminded me of a nightclub in the 70's. But, after shaving with it a few times, the scent really grew on me and I like it quite a bit. It's a fantastic soap and a classic.
