Tabac Bowl Fit

I have several pucks of Tabac soap (just in case) but have never purchased the bowl. I just put the puck in a Pyrex bowl, but the fit is less than ideal. I am getting towards the end of my first puck and am considering purchasing one in the bowl for a better fit. How tight it the fit with the ceramic bowl? I have looked at pictures and some look like a really snug fit and other times is seems there is a decent gap. I am thinking of just grating my next puck into the bowl, but that can have its own issues. Thanks for any input.

It was a snug fit with my puck, but I recently looked in the bowl after several months of non-use and the puck has shrunken away from the container considerably. With regular use I don't believe this would happen.

The soap puck fits pretty snugly in the Tabac glass jar. I used to have one. The only time the soap is going to fit loosely is after the puck has been well used and allowed to dry out and shrink after a prolonged period of disuse.

I have a new spare one in the bowl, just looked at it and there is a slight gap around the top of the puck, the bowls are deeper than the puck too but the puck sits on fins moulded to the inside of the bowl, keeps it off the bottom and stops it from moving around, there is a deep dimple in the bottom of the bowl, the centre of the puck sits on this.

I grate all my hard soaps to give them a snug fit in Pyrex containers and have not had any "issues" as of yet. What concerns do you have right now?

If you like the look of the bowl and would like to have one, I'd say go for it. If all you want is the puck to fit snug in the bowl, you certainly don't have to special order the Tabac bowl.

I have grated a couple pucks/sticks where, for lack of a better description, there are gaps within the grated soap where water seeps down. I have had a couple where water has sort seeped throught the maze of grated soap and as I have gotten towards the bottom, the consistency has gotten "mushy". Not a huge problem, but less than ideal. I do feel like grated soaps are easier to load so that is a benefit as well.

i have had the mushy soap with Tabac and Speick both grated. its pretty weird and i didn't like it very much but at least it didnt seem to make the soap perform subpar.

Its worth it to get the bowl. Its a nice looking addition to your bathroom counter. Very snug fit for puck. It will last a lifetime, made of ceramic I think. If you plan on having Tabac in your rotation for the duration.. you won't be disappointed.

I grated a La Toja stick following directions I found in another post. Grate into bowl, than press down hard with another bowl that just fits inside of the one you put the soap into. I used two different sized pyrex bowls where one fit neatly inside the other. It's worked well. Seems to be a solid puck now. Will have to see what happens when I get down to the very bottom.

As for Tabac I put a puck into a TOBS container from a TOBS cream. That's a high quality container with a nice screw top and the Tabac fit pretty well.

I've had good luck grating a bit off the edges, and bottom, of a puck. Just enough to let it get inside the bowl, and be pushed down to the bottom.

Then, put the grated bits on top of the puck, and push them down with thumbs.

If that's what you're thinking of doing, godspeed to you.

The scent hasn't dissipated!

Just wanted to note, that a puck of Tabac will also fit snugly into an Old Spice mug, even with no trimming.

Both Old Spice Mugs, and the Tabac jar are milk glass, but I think the Old Spice mug is more classy looking!!

+1. Get the bowl!

Hadn't thought of that. I only have one OS mug at the moment, but may give that a chance.

I can't remember the exact numbers, but when I was looking into buying my jar of Tabac with the soap, I remember that there was not a huge price difference between the Jar + Soap vs. Just the Soap..... especially compared to the competition (MWF, DRH wood bowl, etc.). My only point is that a Tabac jar is a good value for what you are getting. It's sturdy, thick and heavy.... and it has a nice lid.... and IMO it looks very nice. One could debate whether it looks as nice or better than an Old Spice mug, but you can't deny the iconic status of both Old Spice and Tabac. Personally, I don't think that the Tabac "bowling pin" style AS and Cologne bottles are very "classy" looking..... but they are cool in there own traditional Tabac way. At any rate, I display my Tabac jar very proudly on my dresser. The other reason I tend to go for the authentic container for the product is because of the shear number of soaps and creams that I have. I wouldn't want to have to make labels for all of the generic containers if that's the way I was storing them. YMMV.

I think the plastic lid that comes with the Tabac Glass bowl makes it worth paying the "slightly higher" price over just a refill.
