What's new

Ta Da!

Hello,

I don't talk a lot on here, mostly because I've just been reading for the last few months and slowly acquiring equipment. My intent is to use straight razors and do some restorations, this has been great fun, but I still have a few more dollars to spend to get my last few hones and strops (1 for learning, 1 for when i don't think i'll accidentally chop it up).

That being said, I wanted to put away the cartridge razor sooner rather than later, so I purchased a nice 1965 slim adjustable on ebay. I love how cheap it is to get into something to try out with DE's. :001_cool: Picked up a DE blade assortment, proraso, and some Mitchell's Wool Fat also.

Today was ground zero, my first shave with the new razor setup - used Shark blades on the first time. Well, I think i can see what all the fuss is about. I have some areas that have never been shaved that close.. ever.. on my face. I am impressed.

I still have much to learn as I also made a small blood donation into the sink water. Gotta learn how to get that tricky area that grows crazy sideways just on top of the adam's apple.

All in all, I like it. Looking forward to tomorrows shave :001_smile

You started with some great stuff. Proraso and MWF are two of the finest products out there. Glad to hear you have a blade assortment.

You will be getting great shaves shortly.

Welcome to B&B.

You're off to a great start.....Congrats.

I know you were not asking for advice, but if you've read a few posts then you should know you're going to get some solicited or not.....lol.

If you want to increase you rate of learning, turn that slim down to one and shave that way for a few days or on days when you have the time. The lower number forces you to keep the angle of the razor right or you get no shave. It may cause you to make a few more passes, but hey, that is half the fun and gives you more time behind the wheel.

Have fun and enjoy the adventure.

A slim and MWF is a great place to start.
I kept a slim in my dopp kit for a long time.
A good trusty razor that will adapt to any blade.

Welcome and we look forward to hearing about your future shaves.

Welcome!

Pull the skin over your adams apple to one side or the other, and set your slim to a milder setting, take it nice and slow, and you should be okay.

Thanks for the advice!

So far the shaves have been getting better and better, for instance, I think that I may have only had 1 small nick today and overall the shave was much closer than when I started.

now about all these interesting aftershaves.... hmmm.. so many to try. I've rarely used aftershave in my shaving career, but have tried some of the more common ones like aqua velva and whatnot.

I'm sure i'm asking for it, but :001_rolle any suggestions to start with?

Welcome to the fold :001_smile. And congrats on a good first shave...a little blood is expected the first rounds. Don't worry...it won't last too long.

Cheers,
Robert

Awesome, welcome to the club. I too want to eventually get into straights, but not yet... I have visions of people finding my dead and bloody body, limp on the bathroom floor with shaving cream still on my face.

I'm a week into my DE shaving career (hobby, madness, whatnot :tongue_sm) and have never used aftershave ever. But I found Clubman at the local store and figured why not for $6. Man, I am addicted to it. There's something about the smell I just love.

A good shave, and some clubman equals a day of faceturbation.

I may just have to give that a try.

I have another question

After I shave I have been taking the blade out of the razor and wiping it down. I have also, very gently, been removing the moisture from the blade and then put it back into the razor and put it on it's stand.

Is there a better way or am i doing it right?

The only time I take my blades out of the razor are to throw them away (safely of course).

I just generally shake out the water and that's it. Now if I had a multiple razor collection stored in a high humidity environment, I might take out the blade.

Ok, I was under the impression that the blades could rust the razor. As I live in a very non-humid climate I think I will do the same.

Thanks! :thumbup1:

I keep a large paper clip bent so that it forms a hook on both ends. I remove the blade from the razor via thumb on one end and forefinger on the other end. I hook the blade in the middle with one end of the paper clip, dip the blade in rubbing alcohol and then hang the paper clip on my shelf with the blade still on it, for the alcohol to evaporate leaving a dry and sterilized blade. Then when I'm ready to shave, I load the blade with the paper clip, slide the paper clip hook off and go. This of course isn't necessary and isn't required at all, but it's what I do and what I prefer to do. Just giving you an idea.

But never wipe a blade to dry it. This will dull your sharp edges and you'll feel it next shave.
